I’ve noticed that for a long time, the anime and manga world has really been shaped by series aimed at young boys – what’s known as ‘Shonen.’ A lot of the biggest hits, like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Demon Slayer, fall into that category, and it’s usually filled with action-packed battles. While ‘Seinen’ manga – aimed at older teens and adults – doesn’t always get the same global attention, it often delivers some of the most original and thought-provoking stories you can find. Interestingly, the 80s and 90s were a great time for both genres. During that era, Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte, which came out in 1989, became a truly celebrated manga, and it’s still considered a classic today.
Iwaaki is best known for Parasyte, which gained even more fans after its anime adaptation in 2014. However, many weren’t familiar with his earlier work, the historical manga Historie, until recently. Historie first appeared in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine in 2003, and an anime adaptation by LINDENFILMS was announced earlier this year. Now, Anime News Network reports that the anime will premiere in January 2027. Adding to the excitement, Nobunaga Shimazaki, who voiced Shinichi Izumi in Parasyte: The Maxim, will voice Eumenes in Historie. A new promotional video also revealed additional cast members.
What Is Parasyte About?
Many shows explore what it means to be human, but Parasyte: The Maxim does so with a particularly poignant and moving story. It centers on a typical teenager who gradually loses his connection to his own humanity, without realizing what he’s lost. The series follows his difficult journey as he tries to regain that lost part of himself.
Seventeen-year-old Shinichi Izumi is caught in an alien invasion where worm-like creatures take control of people’s bodies. Because Shinichi was wearing headphones, the alien only managed to infect his right hand, and surprisingly, they began to live together peacefully. But while Shinichi’s alien isn’t interested in causing harm, many of the others are. Now, Shinichi has to fight against these dangerous aliens and try to save the world.
