The DCU is just getting started, so we haven’t seen many of the famous characters and villains from DC Comics yet. As of now, only Creature Commandos, Superman, and season 2 of Peacemaker are officially part of the DCU’s story. Some parts of The Suicide Squad and season 1 of Peacemaker are also included, but overall, the DCU is still missing a lot of DC’s most popular superhero teams.
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been keeping track of all the teams James Gunn is building for the DCU, and it’s interesting to see what’s popped up so far. We’ve seen what looks like the very first version of the Justice League – or maybe the Justice Society – in Superman, and teams like the Creature Commandos and the Suicide Squad have already been established in other projects. But that’s pretty much it! Lanterns is going to give us the Green Lantern Corps, which is awesome, but beyond that, a lot of the iconic teams from the comics are still missing. I know they can’t include everyone, but it’s a little surprising considering DC has already laid the groundwork for some of these groups in previous movies and shows.
5) The Terrifics

The Terrifics are a DC Comics team, though not as widely known as some others. The group—consisting of Mister Terrific, Plastic Man, Metamorpho, and Phantom Girl—came together when a cosmic accident unexpectedly linked them.
Mister Terrific is an important character in the Superman stories, and James Gunn likely has plans to include him in the future of the DC Universe. Because both Mister Terrific and Metamorpho are already part of the DCU, a certain team—possibly the Challengers from the Future—could be forming soon. While the comics suggest Plastic Man and Phantom Girl are the only other members needed to complete the lineup, James Gunn is free to choose anyone he wants for the team.
4) Doom Patrol

The Doom Patrol isn’t DC’s most famous team, but the 2019 TV show of the same name really put them on the map. The team is made up of unusual characters with strange abilities, which would fit well with the style of a James Gunn project. Because the show exists in its own separate timeline, the Doom Patrol can be easily integrated into the main DC Universe or reimagined if the franchise wants to use them in the future.
3) The Legion of Doom

The DC Universe is building up its hero teams, and eventually it will need a major group of villains too. DC Comics has several options for these villain teams – like the Injustice Society, Injustice League, League of Super-Villains, and the Legion of Doom – that often feature DC’s most famous and powerful bad guys. Lex Luthor is frequently the one who brings these teams together.
As a DC fan, I’m thrilled that Lex Luthor is already established in the DC Universe – it opens the door for a truly epic supervillain team! The best part is, James Gunn and Peter Safran don’t need to wait for new characters to be introduced; they can build a Legion of Doom using villains we’ve already met. While anything is possible, I’m personally hoping to see a classic roster – think Sinestro, Black Manta, Cheetah, and even Giganta. That would be a villain team worthy of Superman!
2) The Teen Titans

The Teen Titans are a well-loved DC team, famous both for their appearances in comic books and several successful TV shows. The animated series Teen Titans and Teen Titans GO! were particularly popular, and helped introduce audiences to the team’s most well-known members. Good news for fans: a Teen Titans movie is currently being developed, with a script by Ana Nogueira.
The Teen Titans usually consist of Robin, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, and Beast Boy, but none of them are currently part of the DC Universe. While a version of Robin will appear in The Brave and the Bold – though it’s unclear which one – it’s likely that some or all of these heroes will show up in the upcoming Teen Titans movie.
1) The Justice League

The Justice League is the DC team we most expect to see in the DCU. As DC’s most famous and recognizable group – similar to Marvel’s Avengers – a movie bringing them together seems inevitable, and it’s likely we’ll hear about them soon in upcoming DCU projects.
Even though the Justice League is made up of DC’s most popular heroes, we haven’t seen many of them appear in the new DC Universe yet. Superman is a consistent member, but upcoming shows like Lanterns will finally introduce Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Batman will also be joining the lineup in The Brave and the Bold. However, fan favorites like the Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter haven’t been seen yet. The previous DC Extended Universe quickly put the Justice League together, so the DCU is wisely taking a slower approach to building the team properly.
