This anime, originally released in 1999, is a deeply emotional and unsettling sci-fi fantasy. It’s known for its mature themes of war and loss. The story centers around Shuu, a normal boy who loves kendo, and his encounter with a mysterious blue-haired girl named Lala-Ru, who wears a unique pendant. When Shuu tries to become friends with Lala-Ru, he sees a woman and two snake-like robots trying to capture her.

I watched as Shuu, driven by a strong sense of what’s right, tried to help someone in need, only to suddenly find himself in a desolate, harsh desert. It was a much bleaker place than he’d known before. Even thrown into this dying world, he refused to give up on protecting Lala-Ru, facing whatever hardships came his way. Throughout his journey, he witnessed the terrible realities of war – the torture, the starvation – but he never lost his compassion, holding onto it with unwavering strength.

In 2016, WIT Studio released a beautifully animated series directed by Tetsurō Araki, who also directed the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. The show won a Newtype Anime Award for Best TV Anime and later became available on Netflix. It’s set in a turbulent world experiencing an industrial revolution, and revolves around terrifying creatures called Kabane, which are born from a strange virus.

These creatures are terrifying – they eat people, and a bite from them turns you into one of them! The only way to truly defeat them is to destroy the armored core of their hearts, which is incredibly difficult. Even with huge protective walls, humanity isn’t safe from this threat. While the anime will be removed from Netflix on September 13th, 2026, you can still watch it on Crunchyroll.

1) Dororo

The anime Dororo is a fresh take on Osamu Tezuka’s 1967 manga and a remake of the 1969 series Dororo to Hyakkimaru. It’s a powerful story about a hero facing incredible hardship as he fights for his place in a cruel world. The story begins with Daigo Kagemitsu, a ruthless lord who made a deal with twelve demons to save his failing land, and was willing to sacrifice even his own unborn son to achieve his ambitions.

Born without limbs, a face, or even skin, a young boy miraculously survives. Abandoned at birth, he’s rescued by a compassionate craftsman who builds him prosthetic limbs and weapons, giving him a chance at life. He sets out on a quest to destroy the demons who stole his body parts as offerings. Along the way, he meets Dororo, a young orphan who joins him after being left to survive on his own following the loss of his parents.
