As a long-time resident of Cambridge and a former student at its esteemed university, I found David Mitchell’s new comedy drama detective show Ludwig to be an absolute delight. Not only did it offer a captivating plot and quirky characters, but it also served as a love letter to the city that has held a special place in my heart for many years.

David Mitchell’s fresh comedy-drama detective series, titled Ludwig, is now streaming on BBC iPlayer. While audiences are likely to be captivated by the peculiar characters and engaging storylines, they might also discover themselves drawn to the series’ striking variety of locations.

In the realm of gripping crime dramas, I find myself captivated by the intricate portrayal of its setting, a world richly textured with diverse locales where the chilling weekly mysteries unfold. From the hallowed halls of a school to the tranquil chapel, the bustling construction site to the towering office block, each location adds an enigmatic layer to the storyline, keeping me on the edge of my seat week after week.

However, could you tell me the location where Mitchell and his co-stars like Anna Maxwell Martin, Dipo Ola, and Ralph Ineson filmed the series, and where does the story take place instead?

Read on for everything you need to know about the filming locations and setting for Ludwig.

Similar to numerous detective series, Ludwig is primarily set within a single significant location, delving deeply into the unique aspects of that region.

In Ludwig’s situation, it’s Cambridge – a university that carries a special significance for David Mitchell, as he earned his bachelor’s degree there.

During a Q&A session, Mitchell shared that indeed he was a student there, expressing his affection for Cambridge. He mentioned with pleasure that the show’s setting was in Cambridge, as he believes a beautiful backdrop greatly contributes to the essence of the genre.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the charm of detective series that transport me to different times and places. Inspector Morse, with its Oxford backdrop, is like a captivating mystery tour through the heart of academia. Miss Marple takes me on a cozy journey to quaint villages where secrets lurk around every corner. And while Poirot and Sherlock Holmes whisk me away to the past, I can’t help but appreciate the aesthetic beauty of eras gone by, even if I know life wasn’t always easy during those times.

It’s no wonder that since the series is set there, a significant portion of it was indeed filmed in Cambridge itself. During a Q&A session, Mitchell even mentioned his plans to come back to this region.

He mentioned that he had visited the place on multiple occasions. It felt great to shoot something there since, during his earlier visits, he yearned to make acting and comedy a career. So, being able to work there now was like coming full circle, in a sense.

Clearly, those who return to where they spent their youth or studies understand that a profound, almost unbearable nostalgia fills such places. This bittersweet feeling serves as a reminder from life itself that our time here is finite.

As you take a glance at your surroundings, memories flood in of the times you used to have fun here, the different rooms that belonged to your old friends. However, those friends are no longer here, replaced by new people.

It’s mostly about how unsettling and sorrowful the relentless march of time can be, something we often attempt to divert attention from using television.

In Cambridge, they were seen filming scenes from the show at places like St. John’s College, the Millpond, and the River Cam.

During the interview, Mitchell was queried about some of the favorite filming locations from the series where each crime took place. Regarding this, he expressed that shooting one episode at a grand estate was “wonderful” and “appropriate”.

He continued: “But there’s an episode where the crime is to do with a walking tour of Cambridge, and that’s particularly nice because it’s a lot of Cambridge exteriors.

We filmed it in January, surprisingly enough, the weather was exceptional; it was a bright, sunny day, making Cambridge look particularly charming. I believe this might have been my favorite setting for a crime scene.

Additionally, there’s a scene where the crime occurs at a construction site. Although Mitchell referred to it as an intriguing enigma, he admitted that working on such sites was not among his dreams as a child.

He added humorously, “The demise of the British economy worked in our favor since some structures remained unfinished due to lack of funds. This allowed us to shoot there. However, it’s likely that these buildings will not be completed; instead, they’ll be torn down.

In response to the proposal of using the site as a tribute to Ludwig, aimed at strengthening Cambridge’s economy, Mitchell commented: “I have exclusive information that the location mentioned was not actually in Cambridge. Instead, it’s merely acting or pretending to be in Cambridge.

We know that the series also shot scenes at various locations in and around London.

Ludwig is available to stream in full now on BBC iPlayer.
