As someone who devoured Big Little Lies both in its novel form and as a captivating HBO series, I can confidently say that this news about a sequel has sent me into a whirlwind of excitement! Having followed Liane Moriarty’s work since her children were indeed little, it is fascinating to witness how the lives of her characters have grown alongside hers.
In the realm of television adaptations based on cherished books, it’s fair to assert that there’s still a lot of excitement circulating about Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies.
Apart from being an immediate hit when published in 2014, the bestselling novel also inspired a popular HBO series, featuring actresses such as Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, among others.
For quite a while now, there’s been a lot of talk about what might happen with the TV show. But here’s something exciting for enthusiasts of the initial book:

Since I penned Big Little Lies during my children’s early years, the kids in the story are only beginning kindergarten. Now, as my own children have grown into teenagers, they’ve become a rich source of teenage-related content.
In my next story, I’ve moved on to portraying the children as teenagers, which means these characters will now be depicted as parents of teenagers.
So, will there be a significant time jump? “Yes, yes exactly,” she explained.
In my cinematic journey as an avid reader and viewer, I’ve always found myself captivated by Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of Madeline. However, when it comes to the upcoming sequel novel, it seems that the author has opted for a more diverse focus, stating, “I haven’t yet decided on a single character to zero in on.
At this point, I don’t have much information to share beyond the fact that these individuals are currently raising teenagers. However, I do have all the principal women characters in my story, and they are all present and accounted for.
When asked about possible expansions for Big Little Lies in either its sequel book or a hypothetical third season, Moriarty replied: “I will certainly introduce new characters in the upcoming novel.
Although an official confirmation for Season 3 of Big Little Lies hasn’t been made, there’s a lot of chatter about it lately following Nicole Kidman’s statement in June (via Variety): “We’re working swiftly and vigorously. Liane [Moriarty] is writing the book, and things are looking promising.
As I embark on crafting a sequel to my beloved series, I must acknowledge that it’s no walk in the park. However, I am diligently “distancing” myself between the concepts brewing for the novel and the visual interpretation seen on television. After all, each medium has its unique ways of storytelling, and I aim to honor both while creating a captivating continuation.
She clarified: “If they decide to adapt the book for a TV series, it’s their responsibility to set it back in Monterey and carry out all the necessary steps. However, I must confess, due to the series, I unintentionally overlooked one character from the original book.
In the book, a character named Fred is introduced as Madeline’s child. When I started reading, I remembered him but had momentarily forgotten his presence. The idea crossed my mind to incorporate him in an interesting way, perhaps depicting him as a recluse who spends all his time playing video games, implying he’s vanished from reality. However, since the new novel needs to be a continuation of the previous one, I decided Fred should play a role, albeit a secluded one.
Might there be a chance we see Fred in hypothetical Season 3 of Big Little Lies? Moriarty humorously suggests they can’t include Fred as the character seems to have disappeared.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential return of my favorite TV series for its third season. However, what I am certain of is the delight fans, including myself, will undoubtedly feel upon reading Moriarty’s eagerly anticipated sequel novel.
Contrary to the television show, Moriarty’s original story wasn’t based in Monterey County, California; instead, it unfolded on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. However, similar to the series, I find myself drawn into the lives of Jane, Madeline, and Celeste – these three mothers who share a common thread: they’re all raising kids and are finding companionship along the way.
As fresh faces emerge and our old cast of children have now grown, we’re left wondering about Moriarty’s plans for the central female characters in this intricate narrative. We’re on tenterhooks to find out what happens next!
