Checking In With the Departed Doctors of Grey's Anatomy

As I delve into the lives of these Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital alumni, I am struck by their resilience and versatility, much like a surgeon who must adapt to any situation that comes their way.

While Alex Karev was living it up on the farm with Izzie Stevens and their twins, in reality, Justin Chambers’ children have grown up. We’re unsure of where or how this happened, but it seems that time has passed for them outside of the fictional world.

Speaking to People earlier this year, the former Grey’s Anatomy star expressed excitement about his wife Keisha Chambers approaching 30, as their family consists of daughters Isabella (29), Maya and Kaila (both 27), Eva (25), and son Jackson (22). He proudly stated, “She’s very socially conscious and she’s just a very loving girl who is deeply engaged with global issues.

Speaking of the rest of my crew, let me tell you, this Ohio-born guy is humbled by their knowledge! They’ve got their degrees, making them more academically inclined than I am. There are moments when I find myself in awe, marveling at their intelligence and enthusiasm for various subjects. Yet, what truly matters is that they’re kind individuals, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

Additionally, he was quite excited to grab a little more time together before they spread their wings and flew away.

2020’s departure of the widely acclaimed ABC medical series, after a run of 16 seasons, felt like a deep wound to Chambers just as it did to devoted viewers.

He pointed out to the photographers in January that since one spends a significant portion of their life in a place for 15 years, this was true in his case. However, he added that he was eager to discover what other opportunities awaited him in his career and was particularly looking forward to experiences related to “life, family, love, and friendship.

Over the past four years, he has skillfully balanced two roles. On one hand, he guided his team members towards their college graduation. Simultaneously, he took on the role of Marlon Brando in the recently released 2022 mini series titled “The Offer.

Additionally, he isn’t the only character from the series who was contemplating an offer that was too tempting to decline.

Ellen Pompeo, the actress who brought the Grey to Grey’s Anatomy for a remarkable 19 seasons, playing the role of Meredith Grey, an intern-turned-acclaimed chief of surgery, revealed in 2022 that she would be stepping down from her role, although not quite retiring, as she may still be seen wearing her scrub cap.

Speaking to TopMob News last year, creator Shonda Rhimes expressed that while it was sad for everyone when Ellen departed, the possibility of her returning was equally significant. “It was a bittersweet moment,” Rhimes said, “but it wasn’t a goodbye for me because she’s coming back. In my mind, she hasn’t left the show; she’s still providing voiceovers and remains present.

With the Season 21 premiere of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital on Sept. 26 at 10 p.m., it’s an exciting day for us die-hard fans to catch up with our beloved team of doctors and nurses!

In the third season, Burke left Cristina at the altar, vanished afterwards, and later won a Harper Avery award at another location. Over time, he shifted to Zurich, Switzerland, where he established a cutting-edge hospital of his own. He got married, started a family, and in season 10, as he was retiring, he invited Cristina to take over his hospital.

After a heated altercation with his costar T.R. Knight, Isaiah Washington was reported to have used a derogatory term for gay people, leading him to exit the series. His attempts at damage control only worsened the situation until he was ultimately dismissed from the show. However, it appears that he and ABC reconciled, as he was allowed to return in 2014. Since then, his most notable roles have been Thelonious Jaha on The CW’s “The 100” until his character met his end in season five, followed by a standout performance in the Starz hit series, “P-Valley”.

In the fourth season, Intern Norman made his debut, often finding himself defending against misconceptions about his role as an intern instead of an attendant due to his apparent youth. Unfortunately, one mistake led him to inform a patient inaccurately that she was dying, and later he suffered a stroke. Post-surgery, which aimed to extract the blood clot, Norman decided to switch departments and move towards psychology.

Edward Herrmann, a well-respected actor with a notable reputation, is primarily recognized for his role as Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls. He made appearances in numerous episodes of The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and even American Dad before passing away in 2014.

During Bailey’s maternity leave, Sydney, a lively neighbor, temporarily stepped in and caused quite a stir with her enthusiasm. Among the most heart-wrenching entries on the list, during season five’s finale, George made a fateful decision to join the military as a trauma surgeon. On his way to fulfill this choice, he heroically rescued a woman from being struck by a bus, but unfortunately, he was hit instead. His injuries were so severe upon reaching the hospital that no one identified him until he scribbled his nickname, 007, on Meredith’s hand using his finger. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t save him, and George tragically passed away.

As a devoted admirer and an integral part of the production team for several turbulent seasons filled with off-screen drama (such as Isaiah Washington reportedly using offensive language towards me), I found myself grappling with certain storylines involving George and the scarcity of his presence in the early stages of season five. Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to request a release from my contract.

2017 found me back at Shondaland, gracing the screens of The Catch for a spell, and I’ve made appearances on shows like The Good Wife, 11.22.63, Genius, and more. In 2019, I stepped into the world of animation with The Bravest Knight, and in 2020, I joined forces with Kaley Cuoco in the HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant. Additionally, I paid a visit to Grey’s for a single episode, where I had the pleasure of meeting Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.

In the early fifth season, Erica Hahn ended both her relationship with Callie Torres and her job at the hospital after learning that Callie chose not to disclose that Izzie Stevens had severed Denny Duquette’s LVAD wire in an attempt to save his life. Since then, she has expressed a desire to reprise her role, but Shonda Rhimes, the creator, hasn’t shown interest. In 2015, she told TVLine, “I’m finished with that story.

Despite the frequent turmoil that many Grey’s interns often stir up, Megan might opt for the scalpel instead. She found herself in a complicated love situation involving Steve and Pierce; they were dating, but she slept with Steve, which led to Pierce wanting to harm Steve. Later, Megan became pregnant by Steve, got married, and hasn’t been seen since season six following Derek Shepherd’s decision to rehire her.

However, she reappeared briefly in season 14 when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while she was in Seattle visiting her parents. In the chilling events of season six, I found myself unwittingly caught up in Gary Clark’s tragic scheme. He had come armed with a deadly weapon, intending to take the life of Derek. Unfortunately, it was me who suffered the consequences first, as I received a fatal gunshot wound to the head. My life ended instantly in that harrowing hospital setting.

During the filming of season six, unfortunately, Percy met his end. Despite Bailey’s valiant efforts to save him, their predicament worsened when the elevators malfunctioned during the evacuation, leaving Percy’s fate sealed.

As the once-estranged wife of Derek, who transitioned into a beloved character on Grey’s Anatomy with her own spinoff, I was last seen as a regular cast member during the somewhat contentious musical episode in season seven. In this episode, I played a crucial role in saving Callie after her car accident. Additionally, I made appearances in the 2012 episode where Meredith imagined her mother was still alive and married to Richard, while Derek and I were still struggling with our marriage. I also returned for an arc in 2023.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Lexie, Meredith’s vibrant half-sister, met an untimely end in one of the series’ most emotionally charged plotlines – the tragic plane crash. Despite her efforts to reach the hospital (originally known as Seattle Grace), she sadly didn’t make it back alive, having been tragically pinned by debris while Mark Sloan, her loving partner, mourned for her. During Meredith’s coma due to COVID-19, Lexie and Mark reappeared, suggesting that their relationship had been resurrected in the afterlife.

Instead, he managed to make it back to the hospital where he lived for a few days despite his critical injuries. The hospital has since been named in memory of both him and Lexie, with the survivors using their lawsuit settlement money to purchase it as a tribute following the plane crash. Mark and Lexie came back together in spirit, visiting Meredith while she was in a coma, suggesting that they found each other again after death.

Recall the OGYN resident who used to date Jo during season nine? Their relationship took a turn for the worse when he discovered her secrets she hadn’t shared with him, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation. This fight ended up with Jason suffering head injuries after falling and hitting his head in the hospital. Alex managed to dissuade him from pressing charges against Jo, and since then, he hasn’t been seen or mentioned again.

As an ardent admirer, I found Dr. Herman turning into my unyieldingly exacting mentor in fetal surgery, but she appeared strikingly understanding once I learned about Nicole’s colossal terminal brain tumor. Miraculously, Amelia managed to remove the tumor, yet Herman had to part ways due to losing her sight in season 11. However, she made a comeback in season 14 to aid Arizona in leaving the show, generously providing grant money to establish a women’s health center in New York.

After the plane crash, Cristina Yang experienced a very difficult period and took a considerable amount of time to fully heal. Later on, she found out that it was impossible for her to win the Harper Avery award while working at that hospital, which made her contemplate moving on. Then, her old love, Preston Burke, invited her to Zurich to manage the advanced hospital he had established, allowing him to retire with his family. She eventually left after a farewell dance party with Meredith in season 10.

At present, Sandra Oh is making waves as a prominent television personality, portraying Eve in the highly praised BBC America show “Killing Eve,” which earned her a Golden Globe. During several challenging years, Derek Shepherd accepted a position working under President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., hoping to bring Meredith and his family along. However, she declined, leading them to live separately for some time. Eventually, he chose to rectify the situation by returning home to perform his duties remotely instead.

In season 11, much like finding happiness once more with Mer, he found himself traveling to wrap up outstanding matters. However, his journey was abruptly disrupted when he stumbled upon a devastating car crash. He spent numerous hours attending to the injured victims, and just after returning to his own vehicle, he was struck by a truck. The medical team at the hospital where the ambulance transported him were caught off guard by trauma cases and neglected to perform a head CT scan, which ultimately led to his demise.

Initially, she came in as Callie’s new love interest, but her past association with the doctor who had supposedly killed Derek cast a long shadow over her. To make matters worse, she had to work under the watch of the often gruff Meredith. Things escalated when Penelope secured a high-profile job in New York, which led Callie to consider moving there as well. This decision sparked a bitter custody dispute between Callie and Arizona. As of now, it appears that Penelope and Callie have parted ways (which explains Arizona’s relocation to New York). However, their relationship was destined for trouble from the start.

In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement for training the residents, but her strict adherence to rules and lack of empathy made everyone dislike her intensely – even Meredith was suspended because of it. When she became so fixated on protocol that she failed to inform the police about a resident missing during a fire, she was terminated from her position. The incident almost proved fatal for Stephanie.

As a committed follower, I made the choice to venture out and discover uncharted territories, embarking on something fresh at the conclusion of season 13. The two of them, along with the child Megan had adopted during her time abroad, relocated to Los Angeles. This event marked the end of a promising relationship between Nathan and Meredith, but it was an incredibly joyous conclusion to Riggs’ storyline.
