Mufasa Star Billy Eichner Pitches Timon & Pumbaa Spinoff Series With Seth Rogen

As a fan who has grown up with the magic of Disney’s The Lion King, it’s absolutely thrilling to see Billy Eichner‘s passion for his role as Timon. His desire to collaborate with Seth Rogen on a spinoff series or even a musical is music to my ears! The chemistry between these two actors is undeniable, and I can only imagine the hilarity they would bring to a Timon and Pumbaa adventure.

Billy Eichner expresses his hope that ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ won’t mark the end of his time in the Pride Lands. Known for reprising his role as Timon, he shared his affection for the character during an interview with egmr.ru. He mentioned that should the opportunity arise, he would be delighted to collaborate with this cast once more. Proposing a potential spinoff series, Eichner suggested a show centered around Timon and Pumbaa, featuring himself and Seth Rogen in the leading roles.

Mufasa is a prequel story that takes place years before the events of The Lion King, and Timon and Pumbaa serve as a narrative framework, commenting on the action from a distance. At times, their commentary may take some creative liberties, leading to speculation about potential expansion through additional shorts or featurettes. When asked if he would be open to further developing this concept, actor Billy Eichner enthusiastically replied: “I’d love to create a musical! Why just make shorts? I adore playing Timon, and I enjoy collaborating with Seth Rogen. I’d do anything with Seth and these characters – it’s such a blast working together, and when we’re in the studio, it feels much like working on a traditional live-action film.

When inquired about the absence of a musical number featuring Timon and Pumbaa in the current film, Eichner expressed his dissatisfaction promptly: “I was let down. I’ve had a friendship with Lin-Manuel Miranda spanning over two decades, and he’s been privy to my concerns. I made it clear that if given another chance, I’d like to construct an entire cabaret act centered around Timon.

The film titled “Mufasa,” a blend of prequel and sequel to the 2019 remake of “The Lion King,” employs photorealistic CGI animation, often referred to as live-action. Set after Scar’s downfall, when Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé Knowles-Carter) have a daughter named Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter), the story unfolds. In this movie, Rafiki (John Kani) narrates Kiara the tale of Mufasa’s rise to kingship in the Pride Lands. Meanwhile, Timon and Pumbaa provide their humorous commentary throughout. The majority of the movie is a retelling of events as described by Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa, taking us back in time to witness these historical moments.

To date, Disney has not revealed any definitive plans for more spinoffs in this particular franchise, but that doesn’t mean we should be disheartened, Eichner or his followers. Since its initial release in 1994, the Lion King franchise has undergone numerous adaptations, with Timon and Pumbaa consistently playing significant roles. Currently, you can access both versions of The Lion King on Disney+, as well as the animated sequels released directly to video, the 1995 Timon & Pumbaa animated TV series, and the 2015 Lion Guard animated series.
