The popular Mario + Rabbids game series appears to have come to an end, as a third installment seemed doubtful after the release of “Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.” The departure of Davide Soliani from Ubisoft last summer, who had been with the company for 25 years and served as creative director on the Mario + Rabbids games and their DLC, seems to have sealed its fate. However, in a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, Soliani expressed that although a new Mario + Rabbids game is improbable, he and partner Christian Cantamessa are open to collaborating with Nintendo once more.
Speaking with VGC, Soliani shared that while he had been employed at Ubisoft for many years, the 11 years spent working with Nintendo held immense significance for him. These years were particularly impactful emotionally, but also provided a wealth of learning and collaborative experiences. He described them as simply wonderful. Furthermore, he mentioned that his new venture is an independent studio, suggesting that if Nintendo ever approached them in the future, both he and Christian would be more than eager to engage.
Currently, we can’t predict if Soliani will create another Nintendo game, but given that Nintendo has collaborated with numerous small studios during the Switch era, it’s possible. For instance, an indie studio like Brace Yourself Games was trusted to develop a Zelda spin-off titled “Cadence of Hyrule.” So, while it’s not unreasonable to think that a talented creative director such as Davide Soliani might catch Nintendo’s attention again. However, at the moment, Day 4 Night is focusing on their own project, which Soliani referred to VGC as his “dream project.
During the Nintendo Switch era, the Mario + Rabbids series became a defining element. At first, the idea of merging the Mario family with Ubisoft’s quirky Rabbids seemed odd, but Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle proved to be both critically and commercially successful. Not surprisingly, Ubisoft swiftly announced a follow-up titled Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. In an interview with ComicBook in 2022, Soliani expressed desire for a third Mario + Rabbids game and showed great excitement about the character of Mario overall. However, it appears that those plans did not materialize as planned.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on my recent experience with “Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope”. It received a warm reception from critics, yet it fell short of Ubisoft’s anticipated sales figures. The CEO, Yves Guillemot, has pointed out that the decision to release the game before Switch 2, as suggested by Nintendo, might have impacted sales. Whether or not this would have made a difference is uncertain, but there are hints suggesting that the game still resonates with players. Despite no immediate plans for a third installment of Mario + Rabbids, I can only hope that Nintendo will consider collaborating with Soliani’s team again to develop something that captures the same magical essence.
