Apparently, they’re feeling a bit left out of the AI shenanigans, what with Google and those OpenAI blighters showing off.
So, Zuck, in his infinite wisdom (or perhaps a fit of pique), is personally cobbling together a team of brainy boffins for a brand-new AI division. And not just any old team, mind you, a “superintelligence group”! Sounds like something out of a James Bond film, doesn’t it? At the same time, they’ve chucked a whopping \$15 billion (that’s BILLION with a ‘B’!) at Scale AI and nabbed their CEO, Alexandr Wang. Cheeky!
This “superintelligence group” (honestly, who comes up with these names?) is supposed to leave the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft eating their dust in the race to create an AI that’s as clever as a human. Or, perhaps, even cleverer! Imagine the possibilities… or the horrors! 😱
Once Meta’s cooked up these super-smart models, they’re planning to shove them into everything they own: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp – the whole shebang! Even those Ray-Ban smart glasses that nobody asked for. Zuckerberg’s apparently planning to hire 50 people for this new team. Fifty! That’s a lot of sandwiches to order for lunch.
Meta Invests Nearly \$15 Billion in AI Startup (Crikey!)
Part of this grand scheme involves flinging a mountain of cash at an AI startup. Meta’s splashed out \$14.8 billion on Scale AI, according to some snoopy reporters. This gives them a 49% stake in the company and, as mentioned before, they’ve managed to lure away their CEO, Alexandr Wang. Talk about a sweet deal! Or maybe a slightly desperate one? 🤔
Word on the street (or, rather, according to Bloomberg) is that some folks at Meta are a bit miffed that they’re lagging behind in the AI race. They reckon Meta’s Llama 4 large language model isn’t quite up to snuff compared to the offerings from Google and OpenAI. Ouch! That’s gotta sting.
The AI competition among these tech giants is getting fiercer than a badger defending its sett. Google’s just launched a new model that’s being crammed into its search engine. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Apple have teamed up with OpenAI to stick ChatGPT into their services. It’s all getting a bit bonkers, isn’t it? 🤪
