I’ve been a Power Rangers fan for years, and I’ve seen them battle some incredible villains – Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd are always the biggest threats! It always seems the toughest fights happen when one of the Rangers turns against the team, and everyone remembers the Green Ranger’s story. But I recently remembered that 30 years ago, it was actually the Blue Ranger who nearly destroyed everything for good!
The Power Rangers episode “Blue Ranger Gone Bad,” which aired on May 30, 1995, featured a unique twist on the ‘Ranger turns evil’ trope. Unlike previous instances where a Ranger was mind-controlled or corrupted, this episode involved Goldar creating a duplicate of Billy from a statue. This evil copy stole the other Rangers’ morphers, leaving them helpless against a monster. Ultimately, the real Billy had to return to defeat the duplicate and save his team. The Power Rangers Discover Two Different Billys
A really clever part of this episode is how Rita and Zedd try to get to the Power Rangers. Rather than trying to convince Billy to betray his team, they use a statue he built for class and magically bring it to life as a perfect copy of him.
The new Billy is a perfect copy of the original, but a switch is necessary for their plan to succeed. Zedd and Rita send Putties after the Rangers, and when Billy is separated from the group, they replace him with a clone, trapping the real Billy in Goldar’s prison.
The new Billy quickly offers to repair everyone’s transforming and communication devices, but some Rangers are hesitant to hand theirs over, worried about being left defenseless. Taking advantage of the confusion, the clone secretly steals the other Morphers. This leaves the Rangers unable to transform when they need to battle Rita and Zedd’s latest monster.
Things were tough for a while, but thankfully, the real Billy managed to escape and rejoin his friends. Once back, he quickly secured the Morphers and delivered them to the other Rangers, which turned the tide of the battle.
