Saw 8 Actor Was Supposed To Be In Two More Sequels

The Saw franchise almost went in a completely different direction.

Directed by the Spierig Brothers and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, Jigsaw tells a story unfolding across two different time periods. In one, a group of strangers find themselves trapped in a barn and forced to participate in terrifying, life-or-death games. Simultaneously, investigators are trying to solve a new series of murders that eerily mirror the work of the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer (played by Tobin Bell), even though he’s supposedly dead.

Hannah Emily Anderson, who played Eleanor Bonneville in the 2017 film Jigsaw (the eighth Saw movie), recently shared that she initially agreed to appear in three movies as part of the franchise. In an interview with The Direct, she explained that plans for her character to have a larger role were eventually cancelled.

The movie Jigsaw ends with Eleanor surviving the traps and driving away with a mysterious person. This immediately led fans to wonder if she might become the new Jigsaw killer or somehow carry on his work. Unfortunately, the filmmakers never explored this possibility in the subsequent Saw movies.

Anderson said that during filming, she and the other actors didn’t know how the story would end. They had talked about continuing Eleanor’s story in several sequels, but those plans were canceled when the Saw movies shifted focus and decided to move in a different direction instead of revisiting the plot of Jigsaw.

They never actually told me what happened, which is interesting because when I first agreed to do the movie, it was supposed to be a trilogy. There was a plan to continue the story, but those other two films just never came together, and they ended up going a different route. Honestly, on set, we all spent a lot of time guessing who was in that car during the final scene. I can’t recall what the official story was supposed to be, though. My personal guess? Probably Logan, but it’s just a feeling, you know?

Rather than continuing the main storyline, Lionsgate released Spiral in 2021, a separate movie featuring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. Unfortunately, Spiral didn’t do well with audiences or critics. So, the series went back to its original style with Saw X, which brought back Tobin Bell as John Kramer, giving longtime fans what they were hoping for.

Released in 2023, Saw X is the newest installment in the Saw film series. The movie is set between the first and second Saw films and follows John Kramer as he travels to Mexico seeking an experimental cancer treatment. When he discovers the treatment is a fraud, he decides to take revenge on those who deceived him.

Jigsaw and all the other Saw films can now be streamed on Netflix.
