1. Frostlines – Neil Shea (Book of the Week, Radio 4)

In his new book, National Geographic writer Neil Shea vividly portrays the Arctic and the dramatic changes happening there due to climate change. Once a seemingly permanent and unforgiving environment, the Arctic is now entering a period of rapid transformation. Shea examines how these changes affect the people and wildlife of the region, from the wolves of Ellesmere Island in Canada to Indigenous hunters in Alaska and the shrinking caribou populations across North America. He also explores the geopolitical tensions rising in the Arctic, particularly between Russia and Europe. Through fascinating and often alarming observations, Shea reveals what’s being lost and what the future holds for this critical part of the world.

2. John of John – Douglas Stuart (Fiction Reading, Radio 4)
Okay, so Douglas Stuart, the author who blew everyone away with Shuggie Bain, has a new book out, and it’s already creating quite a stir. This one follows John-Calum, a young man who’s returned to his childhood home on the Isle of Harris after art school hasn’t quite worked out. He quickly realizes he’s the only one who seems to have changed. What really struck me was how Stuart beautifully portrays the tension between John-Calum and the two most important men in his life – his stoic farmer father and his vibrant Glaswegian grandmother. It’s a really powerful story about family, and the often-crushing weight of expectations we place on each other.

They were chosen by their colleagues as the most difficult people to take a break with. As the game unfolds and alliances form, the biggest challenge isn’t winning – it’s facing up to their own personalities and flaws.
