The initial concept for KPop Demon Hunters was drastically different from the final product. It’s surprising to consider Sony passed on what became the biggest film of 2025; KPop Demon Hunters was a massive hit for Netflix, even winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. As the film approaches its one-year anniversary, director Maggie Kang is promoting its success and teasing a sequel, KPop Demon Hunters 2, currently scheduled for release in 2029.
Kang recently shared the original, much grimmer concept for KPop Demon Hunters. Sony began developing the project in 2018, and the initial version was intended to be a mature, violent film. However, after six months of pre-production, Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson saw the potential for a broader audience and suggested the film be reimagined as a family-friendly adventure – a change that ultimately shaped the final product.
KPop Demon Hunters’ Original Version Could Still Have Been a Good Film
The film subtly references Kang’s initial concept for KPop Demon Hunters. There’s a scene where the Huntr/x girls put on leather outfits to fight “Saja,” but this is quickly played for laughs. The impractical outfits hinder them on a slide, creating a self-aware moment where we see what the Demon Hunters could have been. It’s clear now that the final version is a much stronger direction, and Kang’s recent comments give that scene an added layer of meaning.
You know, even though this new take on KPop Demon Hunters didn’t quite land for me, it got me thinking – the original concept actually had a lot of potential. We’ve seen how amazing adult animation can be, especially on Netflix with shows like Arcane, Castlevania, and Devil May Cry. I could easily picture this version being fantastic, leaning into genuine horror with the demons, showcasing really visceral fights between the Saja Boys and Huntr/x, and exploring a much deeper connection between Rumi and Jinu. Honestly, it feels like it could have been a truly phenomenal movie, and given Castlevania‘s success, it could have even spawned a whole franchise. It’s almost frustrating to wonder ‘what if’ they’d gone that route.
The Final Version of KPop Demon Hunters Is So Much Better

Kristine Belson was spot-on. KPop Demon Hunters is a truly stunning animated film, and the final product exceeded all expectations. Kang and Chris Appelhans worked together seamlessly, sharing a clear vision for a grand fantasy story with well-developed characters and strong roots in Korean mythology. The film is breathtaking, and the KPop music adds to the experience beautifully. It evokes the classic Disney feel, where songs naturally enhance the characters’ journeys.
KPop Demon Hunters has been a massive success for Netflix, becoming their most-watched movie ever and the first to reach 300 million views. The movie’s soundtrack also performed incredibly well, hitting the Billboard 200 and accumulating over 3 billion streams worldwide by last August. This popularity propelled Huntr/x to become a major artist on Spotify. To keep the momentum going until the sequel arrives, Netflix has established partnerships for new KPop Demon Hunters content and is even planning a global concert tour.
The timing of the new show couldn’t have been better for Netflix. With the conclusion of its biggest hit, Stranger Things, the company faced a $1 billion budget shortfall. KPop Demon Hunters proved that Netflix offers a wide variety of content beyond just one show, opening up new possibilities and collaborations. Furthermore, the show’s more mature and graphic nature wouldn’t have been possible on a smaller budget.
The film is exceptional – a true animated masterpiece that’s incredibly difficult to fault. That’s reflected in its impressive scores: 91% from critics and a remarkable 99% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s beautifully crafted, artistically brilliant, and clearly resonates with viewers. While the original concept from Kang might have been decent, the changes made by Kristine Belson and Maggie Kang were undoubtedly the right decision, and I’m grateful they made them. It’s even more amazing to learn Sony included this film in their Netflix deal, allowing the streamer to share in its success.
