Some Xbox Users Surprised With Free Xbox Series X Game

I was so surprised to find a free game dropped into my Xbox account! It’s a remastered version of a game originally released way back in 2010. And 2010 was stacked with amazing titles – think games like Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, God of War III, Halo: Reach, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. It was a seriously competitive year for games, which means a lot of really good ones probably didn’t get the attention they deserved. This free game was one of those hidden gems, and I’m excited to finally check it out!

In 2010, Vigil Games and THQ launched a new action-adventure game called Darksiders. It was remastered in 2016 for several consoles, including Xbox One. Now, it’s available on Xbox Series X, and players who already own the Xbox One version can upgrade to the new version for free – without having to repurchase the game or pay an additional fee, unlike many other titles.

When Darksiders first came out in 2010, it was surprisingly well-received, earning a score of 83 on Metacritic. It went on to become a series of games, but there haven’t been any new releases since 2019. Now, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, a remastered version, is available on Xbox Series X for $30. If you already owned the game on Xbox One, you can upgrade to this new version for free. The remaster has also been positively reviewed, with a Metacritic score of 81 and a 4 out of 5-star rating from Xbox users on the Microsoft Store.

The first Darksiders game was a commercial success, selling over a million copies. While we don’t know how many copies the remastered version has sold, it’s likely many Xbox Series X owners are getting it for free as part of an exclusive offer. The remaster is also available on PS5, but players there have to pay to upgrade. The reason for this difference – why there’s a fee on PlayStation and not Xbox – hasn’t been explained, but Xbox fans probably aren’t complaining.
