2026 is shaping up to be a big year for the franchise, as Bandai is releasing a variety of new and updated toys and collectibles. This includes bringing back some older figures, even those based on a particularly debated installment in the series’ history.
Bandai is bringing back model kits for popular Gundam units like the Mandala Gundam, Gundam Rose, and Gundam Maxter. Some of these were originally released about a year ago, and pre-orders are now open. This is part of a larger wave of re-releases, with fans able to expect these kits to be available in late 2026.
Gundam’s Most Controversial Anime Gets Three Model Kit Re-Releases
The 1/144 scale HG Mandala Gundam is a unique mobile suit from the Mobile Fighter G Gundam anime, representing Neo Nepal. Like many designs in the series, it’s quite unusual. Its back and arms look like strings of prayer beads, and it fights with a staff that includes a beam effect. The model kit also comes with extra parts that create the illusion of smaller versions of the Gundam surrounding it. Plus, its bell-shaped lower section can transform into armor covering most of the unit.
This Gundam model kit includes two sets of hands and a stand for dynamic posing. The HG 1/144 Gundam Rose, representing Neo France, has a more traditional design. It features a flowing cape that can be moved and positioned, and comes equipped with a Beam Rapier and deployable “rose bits” for attack. A stand, energy effects parts, and an extra set of hands are also included.

The third Gunpla kit being re-released from G Gundam is the HG 1/144 Gundam Maxter, representing Neo America. It’s designed with armor that looks like a football player, and can be transformed into a “fighting mode” resembling a boxer. The kit includes the Gundam Maxter’s armor, a stand, effects parts, two pistols, and a shield, all highlighting its boxing-inspired style.
These three model kits are now available for pre-order on the Premium Bandai website in Japan, costing approximately $20 USD each. They are expected to ship around September 2026. Notably, Mobile Fighter G Gundam was the first major Gundam anime that didn’t take place within the established universal timeline, instead featuring its own unique story.
The series is famous for its exaggerated, action-packed style, reminiscent of classic ‘Super Robot’ anime. It shifted away from the serious, military-focused space operas of the past, instead featuring a wildly over-the-top international competition called the ‘Gundam Fight,’ where giant robots represented their countries – often relying on stereotypes, and sometimes in ways that were considered insensitive. Bandai plans to release a variety of related products, including items from different timelines within the franchise.
