Early trailers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day featured several villains, though many will only have brief appearances. Boomerang and Tarantula, for example, seem to be shown only in a quick opening sequence highlighting Spider-Man’s recent activities since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Scorpion, who was teased at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, is expected to have a more significant role this time around. A figure resembling Jean Grey also made a brief appearance, and the trailers ended with a surprise look at Daredevil’s adversaries, the Hand.
Recent leaked footage shared by ComicBookMovie.com reveals a clearer look at a villain previously seen in trailers. The footage suggests this new female character is leading the Hand, the group attacking Spider-Man.
Who Is the New Female Villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Recently leaked footage features an interview with Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The footage also shows the prison fight between Spider-Man and the Hand from multiple perspectives. Notably, it includes a close-up of a female ninja seemingly leading the Hand, potentially as their new leader in the film.
It’s still unclear what role this new character will play, but rumors suggest she’s Mariko Yashida. In the Marvel comics, Mariko is the daughter of a powerful Japanese crime boss and the half-sister of Silver Samurai. Tao Okamoto portrayed her in the 2013 film The Wolverine. The comics depict a tragic romance between Mariko and Wolverine; they were once engaged, but she asked him to end her life painlessly after being poisoned.
If the reports are accurate and Mariko Yashida is indeed leading the Hand, that would make two characters connected to Wolverine appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside rumors that Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey. The Hand was last seen in the Netflix series Defenders, where they were pursuing immortality. In the comics, Mariko is one of many women who have led the organization, including characters like Lady Bullseye, Elektra, and Betsy Braddock.
Right now, Mariko Yashida is mostly just talked about, but it seems a strong female warrior is now in charge of the Hand and fighting Spider-Man. This complicates things even further in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day story.
