Star Wars fans are known for quickly turning against projects they dislike, and can sometimes be very harsh in their reactions. This pattern isn’t new – it’s been happening since the prequel movies. While Disney’s involvement since 2012 has certainly seen a lot of negative responses – like those to The Rise of Skywalker and The Acolyte, among others – this kind of fan reaction has been a recurring issue for the franchise for quite some time.
Okay, some of the recent Star Wars stuff really did deserve the backlash – I’ll admit that. Palpatine coming back was just… weird and didn’t make much sense, and The Rise of Skywalker really should have been called out for it. But honestly, there was one live-action show that came out about four years ago that I think people were way too hard on, and it still gets more negativity than it deserves, even now.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Gets Way Too Much Hate

The 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi received a lot of immediate criticism. Some fans were unhappy that the show didn’t center exclusively on Obi-Wan, instead introducing several characters like the new Imperial Inquisitor Reva Sevander and a young Princess Leia. Notably, much of the negative reaction towards Reva involved racist attacks against the actress, Moses Ingram, which Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan, publicly denounced.
Beyond that, a lot of viewers just didn’t enjoy the show and repeated a common complaint within the fanbase: that nobody wanted it in the first place (which isn’t true, as many fans were actually looking forward to it). Others disliked the idea of returning to this period in Star Wars history, especially with a new encounter between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. These viewers felt it contradicted the existing stories from the prequel and original trilogies and strayed too far from established lore.
Even after four years, some fans still strongly criticize the show, and the negativity often feels excessive. In reality, Obi-Wan Kenobi has many positive qualities that haven’t received enough recognition.
This Story Was Especially Important For Leia And Obi-Wan

One reason Obi-Wan Kenobi is a strong series is that it deepened our understanding of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Obi-Wan himself, both during this time period and throughout their lives. Leia’s appearance was a welcome surprise, and the show cleverly explained why she would seek Obi-Wan’s help in A New Hope. Even more significantly, it revealed the reason behind Leia naming her son Ben years later.
The series Obi-Wan Kenobi offered some emotional resolution to the tragic story of the Skywalker family. Leia never had the chance to truly know her parents, and her first encounter with her father was painful, as she didn’t realize who he was. It’s heartbreaking considering how much Anakin and Padmé desired a loving family. The show allowed Obi-Wan to share stories about Leia’s parents with her and point out their similarities, creating a deeply moving and meaningful scene.
The series Obi-Wan Kenobi deepened our understanding of Luke’s connection with his Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen, adding emotional weight to their relationship. While A New Hope doesn’t fully reveal how much the family meant to each other, Obi-Wan Kenobi highlights Beru and Owen’s willingness to sacrifice everything for Luke, and features a touching scene where Owen declares, “He is my own,” speaking about Luke.
Even though some fans debate the reunion of Anakin/Vader and Obi-Wan, it resulted in fantastic fight sequences – some of the best since the prequel films. It also gave a satisfying sense of resolution to the complex relationship between the former master and apprentice, who were once like brothers. You might call it giving fans what they want, but Obi-Wan Kenobi has a lot to offer and doesn’t deserve the strong criticism it often receives.
