The First 10 Members of Alpha Flight, Ranked by Power

Alpha Flight first appeared in issues #120-121 of Uncanny X-Men in 1979, created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Their story was initially tied to Wolverine’s history before he became an X-Man. They were established as Canada’s official, government-funded superhero team, with a hero called Guardian (James Hudson) as their leader. After failing to capture Wolverine for the Canadian authorities, the team launched their own comic book series in 1983, written and illustrated by John Byrne. Starting with six original members, the team grew and became one of Marvel’s most beloved groups during the 1980s.

Let’s explore the original lineup of Alpha Flight – the first ten members – and rank them based on how powerful they are.

10) Puck (Eugene Judd)

Eugene Judd is a superhero known as Puck. He didn’t fight alongside the team when they battled the X-Men, and first appeared in Alpha Flight #1 as one of two new recruits. Originally a very large man, Puck sacrificed his size by impaling himself with the magical Black Blade of Baghdad. He did this to imprison the sorcerer Black Razer within his body. While now much smaller, he’s still exceptionally strong and magically durable because of the blade. Puck has been a member of the team longer than almost anyone else, proving his determination, though his strength remains at the peak of human ability.

9) Box (Roger Bochs)

The Box armor first appeared in Alpha Flight #1 in 1983, but the character of Roger Bochs wasn’t introduced until issue #11. Roger is an engineer and inventor who uses a wheelchair due to paraplegia. He created Box, a robot he originally operated remotely using a special helmet. The Box armor boasts incredible strength, resilience, and can fire energy blasts. Later improvements allowed Madison Jeffries to pilot it from inside. Box is more formidable than Puck because of its superior firepower and its robotic construction, unlike Puck who relies on natural human abilities.

8) Vindicator (Heather Hudson)

A major turning point in the early Alpha Flight comics happened when the team’s leader, Guardian, died in issue #12. His wife, Heather McNeil Hudson, then stepped up to take his place, donning his armor and becoming Vindicator. She first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #139 (1980) and officially became Vindicator in Alpha Flight #32 (1985). Though she didn’t have any superpowers or fighting experience beforehand, the suit she wears gives her incredible abilities, including supersonic flight, energy blasts, and control over gravity. The suit itself is a powerful, advanced weapon, making her a formidable hero. Later, when James (the original Guardian) was brought back to life, Heather took on the Guardian role, and James became Vindicator.

7) Marrina

Marrina first appeared in Alpha Flight #1 as one of the team’s newest members after they’d been associated with the X-Men. She’s an alien from the Plodex species; her egg landed in the Atlantic Ocean 40,000 years ago and unexpectedly hatched in Newfoundland. This caused her to develop a human-like form. She can breathe both underwater and on land, and is an incredibly fast swimmer. When her alien instincts take over, she transforms into a fierce, animalistic state with incredibly sharp claws. She later married Namor and was made an honorary member of the Avengers.

6) Snowbird (Narya)

Snowbird, also known as Narya, first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #120 in 1979 as one of the original members of Alpha Flight. She’s a demigoddess of Inuit origin – her mother was the goddess of the Northern Lights, and her father was human. She was raised as Anne McKenzie in the Canadian wilderness by a man named Shaman. Snowbird can transform into any animal found in Canada, changing size and gaining all of its abilities. She also has the power of flight, can sense mystical energy, has limited precognition and postcognition, and possesses superhuman strength. However, her powers only work within the borders of Canada.

5) Aurora (Jeanne-Marie Beaubier)

Aurora first appeared as one of the original members of Alpha Flight in Uncanny X-Men #120 in 1979. Like her twin brother, Northstar, she has super-speed. Early Alpha Flight comics explored Aurora’s struggles with mental health, specifically dissociative identity disorder, where she shifted between the personalities of the devout Catholic Jeanne-Marie and the carefree Aurora. Her powers often fluctuate with her emotional state. Initially, both twins needed to touch each other to reach their full potential, and Aurora’s mental health challenges sometimes made her less reliable in battle.

4) Guardian (James Hudson)

Guardian was the first member of Alpha Flight and initially served as the team’s link to the Canadian government until their funding was withdrawn. He first appeared in 1978 as Weapon Alpha in Uncanny X-Men #109, then as Vindicator in Uncanny X-Men #120 (1979), and eventually as Guardian in Alpha Flight #2 (1985). He created his powerful battle suit using technology he took from his employer to prevent it from falling into military control. This suit granted him incredible abilities, including supersonic flight (reaching Mach 1), electromagnetic beams, EMP blasts, concussive force, plasma and ultrasonic beams, control over gravity, and the ability to manipulate metal with magnetism. After dying, Guardian was brought back to life and merged with the Quwrlln aliens, transforming him into a cyborg and eliminating his need for the suit to use his powers.

3) Shaman (Michael Twoyoungmen)

Michael Twoyoungmen, known as Shaman, is a mystical member of the superhero team Alpha Flight. Originally a surgeon from Calgary, he embraced his indigenous heritage and joined Department H after the loss of his wife. Shaman uses a magical bag called the Medicine Pouch, which connects to another dimension and allows him to summon virtually any item he can visualize – staves, powders, totems, and more. While the extent of his power in the Marvel Universe is hard to define, it relies on the spirits he connects with. When those spirits are willing, Shaman’s abilities are nearly limitless.

2) Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier)

Northstar and his sister Aurora share similar powers, but because he’s been active as a superhero for much longer, he’s become more powerful. He debuted in Uncanny X-Men #120 in 1979 as an original member of Alpha Flight. As a mutant, he possesses incredible speed, can fly, and can unleash blasts of photonic energy. Notably, he was the first openly gay superhero in major American comics, coming out in Alpha Flight #106. His speed, which is often described as nearly the speed of light, makes him an exceptionally powerful character.

1) Sasquatch

Sasquatch is Alpha Flight’s strongest member and much more than just a powerhouse. First appearing in 1979’s Uncanny X-Men #120, he’s actually the team’s most intelligent member. Walter Langkowski, a physicist, attempted to replicate the experiment that created the Hulk, but it had an unexpected result. He opened a mystical gateway and merged with the powerful entity Tanaraq, transforming into a sasquatch with strength exceeding 100 tons. When fully controlled by Tanaraq – a recurring event – his power dramatically increases, leading to incredibly destructive outbursts. He also shares a unique connection with the Green Door, a nexus for all gamma-powered individuals. In terms of pure strength and resilience, Sasquatch is comparable to the Hulk.
