Netflix is adding a lot of new movies and shows in June, including a highly anticipated anime film. As summer begins, the streaming service is releasing several titles fans have been eagerly awaiting, particularly the newest movie from director Mamoru Hosoda.
Mamoru Hosoda’s latest film, Scarlet, was released last year but has only been available for streaming outside of the US until now. Fortunately, it’s coming to Netflix in the United States on June 6th, as reported by What’s On Netflix. The film launched in some international markets earlier this month.
Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet Confirms Netflix Release Date

Mamoru Hosoda is a highly acclaimed anime director known for his work on popular series like Digimon and Dragon Ball Z, as well as his original films. He’s created beloved classics such as Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, and Wolf Children. While his earlier films used traditional 2D animation, Hosoda has recently transitioned to a more CG-based style, and his latest film, Scarlet, is primarily created using computer-generated imagery.
Scarlet marks the first partnership between Sony Pictures and Studio Chizu. Written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, with music by Taisei Iwasaki, the film is a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It tells the story of a princess who travels through time and space seeking revenge for her father’s death. While it was released in theaters last year, it didn’t get much attention due to competition from bigger anime titles. Now, it’s expected to finally receive the recognition it deserves.
Why You Should Watch Mamoru Hosoda’s Movies

I’ve noticed Mamoru Hosoda’s name popping up more and more in anime circles, though he isn’t as widely known as some other directors – especially when you compare him to Studio Ghibli’s big releases. Still, I think a lot of people have probably seen something he’s worked on. He was involved in earlier films like Digimon Adventure: Our War Game and Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, and he’s since become known for creating original anime like Summer Wars that really pushes the boundaries of the medium.
Mamoru Hosoda is a remarkably imaginative director, known for seamlessly weaving fantasy into realistic settings. His latest film, Scarlet, dives completely into the fantastical, representing his most ambitious project to date. It’s coming to Netflix in late June, and it’s definitely worth watching.
