As a huge TV fan, it’s always exciting when a show really breaks through. It’s not often you see something start on a channel like Syfy and become a genuinely popular, critically loved series. Well, the final season of one of those shows is hitting Netflix on June 6th! I’m a little sad it’s the end – honestly, I was hoping for more adventures with those characters – but it seems like they’re wrapping things up nicely. You never know, Netflix might decide to give it another season or two, but even if it ends here, it’s going out with a fantastic finale.
The show Resident Alien follows Harry Vanderspiegle, who is actually an alien disguised as a doctor. After crash-landing in a small Colorado town, he’s tasked with eliminating all of humanity. However, his mission gets complicated when a young boy discovers his true alien form. As Harry tries to maintain his cover, he unexpectedly starts to connect with the town and questions his original purpose, leading to a series of moral challenges.
Resident Alien is both Ridiculously Absurd and Incredibly Earnest
The show’s greatest strengths are its playful, quirky nature and its surprisingly emotional core—even with the bizarre subplot of a character secretly planning to harm a child. These elements don’t clash; they actually contribute to the show’s success, earning it a 97% approval rating from critics. As Lucy Mangan notes, “Resident Alien” is self-aware and sincere, skillfully using familiar storylines without being cynical or overly reliant on irony to entertain its audience.
Viewers also really liked Resident Alien, even though it received an audience score of 87%, which was a bit lower than some other shows. Some people didn’t connect with its humor, but many found it incredibly funny and enjoyable. One viewer called it “the best show ever,” praising its unique story, excellent cast (especially Alan Tudyk), and its ability to be hilarious, moving, shocking, and dramatic all at once.
