With Bungie releasing the last update for Destiny 2 on June 9th – effectively ending support for the game – news about the company’s future is emerging, and it’s concerning. Reports suggest Bungie is planning major layoffs and isn’t currently working on Destiny 3, which could significantly reduce the size and scope of the company.
Forbes’ Paul Tassi reported further details based on his own sources. Apparently, most of the team at the studio didn’t know the decision to end support for Destiny 2 until it was officially announced. As a result, they continued developing future content, including a rumored expansion called Shattered Cycle. Those in the know supposedly felt cut off and urged management to share the information with the rest of the studio.
Leaders recently held a town hall meeting where they faced repeated questions about potential layoffs. While the layoffs are described as substantial, Tassi reports they aren’t expected to happen right away. And, it doesn’t look like an announcement for Destiny 3 is coming in the near future.
Development didn’t start right after The Final Shape because of the high cost, as Jason Schreier pointed out. Considering Sony’s recent experiences with live-service games haven’t been very successful, they’re hesitant to invest a large amount of money in a new project right now.
This doesn’t mean Bungie is giving up on the Destiny universe entirely. They’re exploring new games set in that world, but not a traditional sequel. It’s unclear what those projects will look like, but for now, the Destiny story fans have been following is coming to an end.
Okay, so everyone’s been asking why Bungie didn’t jump straight into making Destiny 3 after The Final Shape came out two years ago. Honestly, it all comes down to money. Building a game like that is expensive, and that’s the real reason they didn’t start right away.
