Fans will soon be able to stream two beloved young adult action movies on Netflix. Based on Greek mythology and a popular book series, these films sparked debate among viewers about their interpretation of the source material – even leading to a TV series. Despite differing opinions, the movies were undeniably fun and helped launch the careers of several young actors.
Get ready to revisit the world of Percy Jackson! Both Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, starring Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, and Brandon T. Jackson, will be available to stream on Netflix starting June 15th. The Lightning Thief kicks off the adventure as Percy discovers he’s Poseidon’s son and trains with other demigods. He soon finds himself tasked with preventing a war between the gods and rescuing his mother from the Underworld. The second movie, Sea of Monsters, sends Percy and his friends on a quest for the Golden Fleece to protect their home, Camp Half-Blood.
Did the First Screen Iteration of Percy Jackson Get Its Due?
The two movies weren’t well-received by critics or most viewers, but they still gained a dedicated fanbase who particularly appreciated them as the first adaptation of the series. While the films had a playful and clever tone, many mainstream viewers felt they prioritized style over a strong story. One viewer commented, “They’re not great, but not terrible. It feels like the filmmakers only wanted to make two movies hoping Fox would cancel the series.” Others did enjoy the films, with one fan noting, “The Percy Jackson movies, especially Sea of Monsters, are a fun, quick escape that the new show doesn’t quite capture. The show feels slow and overly serious, while Sea of Monsters offers humor, heart, and exciting action, truly capturing the adventurous spirit and charm of Percy’s world without getting bogged down in unnecessary details.”
The movies are enjoyable, but they don’t quite capture the spirit of the original books. When adapting a popular series like Percy Jackson, staying true to the source material is really important to fans. Still, they’re a good way to spend a weekend.
