It often takes time to find the perfect streaming platform for a movie, but Taylor Sheridan’s Hell or High Water seems to have found a great fit. This critically acclaimed 2016 neo-western crime thriller was quickly picked up by a streaming service after gaining recognition as one of the best films of the last ten years.
After a successful theatrical run, Hell or High Water has moved to a new streaming service. This platform’s strong reputation seems like a good match for the film, which received four Oscar nominations but didn’t achieve widespread popularity.
What Is Hell Or High Water About?
As a movie fan, I really got pulled into Hell or High Water. It’s about two brothers – one’s a divorced dad, the other just got out of prison – and they start robbing banks across Texas. They’re not doing it for thrills, though; they’re desperately trying to save the family ranch from being taken away from them. It’s a really gripping story directed by David Mackenzie, with a script by Sheridan.
Chris Pine stars as Toby Howard, with Ben Foster playing his unpredictable brother, Tanner. Jeff Bridges portrays Marcus Hamilton, a seasoned Texas Ranger pursuing them. The film is a gripping heist story, a deep look at the characters, and a stark depiction of hardship in rural America. It’s a focused movie, relying heavily on subtle, powerful performances.
The film Hell or High Water has earned a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 287 reviews, making it Taylor Sheridan’s most critically acclaimed movie – even surpassing his popular film Sicario. It was also recognized as one of the top 10 films of 2016 by the American Film Institute and is listed among the 101 best screenplays ever written by the Writers Guild of America. While it didn’t become a mainstream blockbuster, Hell or High Water has consistently been praised by film critics.
HBO Max Is The Right Platform For Taylor Sheridan
Hell or High Water is often seen as the second film in director Taylor Sheridan’s American Frontier Trilogy, which also includes Sicario and Wind River. All three movies explore themes of violence, poverty, and the shortcomings of systems in the American West. Since its release, the film has gained a large new following, introducing Sheridan’s work to many more viewers.
A lot of viewers are now discovering his earlier films, and giving Hell or High Water a prominent spot on HBO Max should help it finally find the large audience it deserves. While he’s still with Paramount, HBO Max is the most sensible platform for his work.
The movie is now available on HBO Max, joining films like Midsommar, Contagion, and Isle of Dogs. However, it’s likely the most significant addition to the lineup. Given its emotional impact, similar to Hell or High Water, it was always likely to find a good home on a streaming service.
Hell or High Water will be available to stream on HBO Max on June 1.
