Be warned: this article contains major spoilers for the TV show The Boroughs. The show’s creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, have shared that they are holding onto three key mysteries to be explored in upcoming seasons.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I just finished Netflix’s The Boroughs, and it’s really intriguing! Addiss and Matthews are the creative forces behind it, and it’s cool to know the Duffer brothers from Stranger Things were involved as executive producers. The first season wraps up a lot of the central mysteries, but it throws in one last, seriously unsettling question: why is Sam Cooper’s reflection acting so strange in the mirror? It definitely left me wanting more!
I was chatting with the creators of the show, Addiss and Matthews, and they dropped some fascinating hints about where things are headed. Apparently, that moment with Sam glitching in the mirror wasn’t just a cool visual effect – it’s a breadcrumb for future storylines! They definitely seem to be having fun playing with the possibilities. And speaking of mysteries, the lore behind that strange tree in the Cave of Wonders is being deliberately held back. They actually wrote a scene explaining it, but decided to save it for a later season, because it all ties into a bigger picture. It sounds like there’s a lot more to uncover!
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Ilene Addiss suggested the central mystery of the show revolves around the true nature of the character Mother (Nancy Daly). Addiss revealed the creative team knows exactly what Mother is, and that this revelation will be a key part of the story for several seasons. While they aren’t ready to share the answer yet, they hope the audience will eventually discover it along with the characters.
The bathroom mirror scene, where Sam’s reflection flickers in a way that echoes the finale of Stranger Things season one, strongly hints at what’s coming next. While the mysteries surrounding the tree in the Cave of Wonders and the character of Mother aren’t as directly foreshadowed, the creators, Addiss and Matthews, have assured viewers that these questions won’t be left unanswered and will be developed over several seasons.
While Netflix hasn’t officially announced a second season yet, the show is currently performing very well – it’s the #1 show in the US and ranks third globally. Plus, critics and viewers seem to like it, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 95% on the Tomatometer and 86% on the Popcornmeter, which suggests a renewal is likely.
The show’s creators have revealed clues about future storylines, explaining that the strange glitches are actually a way for the character ‘Mother’ to communicate. According to co-creator Addiss, Mother sends out a distress signal that certain sensitive individuals can pick up. The glitches are meant to represent this signal being transmitted through the air, like an old television broadcast. Something significant is happening and being sent out into the world.
In the final scene, Mother enters the Cave of Wonders and appears to be destroyed in an explosion, killing herself, her children, and Blaine Shaw. However, the glitching seen in Sam’s reflection hints that she might still be alive, or that a part of her consciousness survives within Sam.
We learn that Blaine, who used to be known as Marcus Shaw, found an egg in the Cave Wonders back in 1949 – the egg that Mother hatched from. This discovery reveals several key things about Mother: her blood can briefly restore youth and health, she sustains her partially human appearance by consuming human brain fluid, and she perceives time differently than humans do, not in a straightforward, linear way.
We’ve only begun to understand her true abilities and motivations for being in the Cave of Wonders, especially considering Sam’s warning that her ‘Mother’ is far more powerful than we realize. This seems connected to the mysterious tree, found near where Mother’s egg was discovered and where she ultimately needed to return. The peach from the tree, like Mother’s blood, restores youth and health, hinting at a strong link between the two.
All episodes of The Boroughs season 1 are streaming on Netflix.
