This hidden gem of a series, produced by Michael Bay, is now available on Netflix as of June 22nd and is expected to attract a much larger audience. If you enjoy action, science fiction, stories about viruses, and a unique take on a naval setting during the end of the world, this show – which didn’t get enough recognition when it first came out – is definitely worth watching.
Based on William Brinkley’s novel, The Last Ship stars Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, and Charles Parnell. The story unfolds on a ship heading to the Arctic with a scientist on board. When Dr. Rachel Scott (Mitra) is attacked, Captain Tom Chandler (Dane) discovers a virus has decimated over half the world’s population while his crew was away. Instead of following orders to return home, the Captain decides to develop a vaccine onboard, relying on the expertise of Dr. Shaw, who is hiding some secrets.

The series received positive feedback from both viewers and critics, who often commented on its cinematic quality and the distinctive style of its creator. However, opinions were split regarding whether it deserved broad popularity. Carissa Pavlica praised the show’s engaging storyline, noting it felt more like a movie than a typical television program and predicted continued interest. Mark Perigard offered a contrasting view, describing the series as feeling like a promotional tool for the navy set during a disaster, and cautioning potential viewers.
