The Testaments finale airs heartbreaking scenes – and The Handmaid’s Tale legend makes surprise appearance

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for The Testaments episode 10, Secateurs.*

The second-to-last episode of The Testaments ended with Becka (Mattea Conforti) being taken away by The Eyes, which deeply upset Agnes (Chase Infiniti). Agnes had hoped that telling Becka’s parents would get her the help she needed.

In the final episode of the series, Becka is shown struggling and imprisoned for her actions.

Agnes explains, through her storytelling, what the autopsy revealed – performed by Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards) – showing the injuries were far more severe than needed to cause death, suggesting the attacker was very forceful and angry. Her classmates are left confused about what happened.

The severe injuries to Dr. Grove’s genitals indicate Becka intentionally inflicted them as revenge for his actions towards Agnes, with whom she is secretly in love.

Becka appears broken and withdrawn while imprisoned, endlessly repeating the children’s song “Rise and Shine.” However, viewers might be surprised by an unexpected guest during Aunt Lydia’s visit – a shocking cameo appearance.

When Aunt Lydia walks toward Becka’s cell, she’s accompanied by Margaret Atwood, the writer who created the worlds of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments.

Speaking as if she’s a prison guard, she firmly tells Aunt Lydia not to upset her, then walks away.

The celebrated author is also an executive producer on The Testaments, and she enjoys making cameo appearances in adaptations of her work. She previously appeared in the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale back in 2017, showing she likes being involved in the on-screen versions of her novels.

She also played a strict aunt who physically assaulted Offred (June, played by Elisabeth Moss) in a tense and upsetting scene with the other Handmaids.

Although Margaret Atwood only makes a very brief appearance in The Testaments, it’s a delightful cameo for fans of both the books and the TV series. It’s especially exciting to see her share a scene with Ann Dowd, who originally starred in The Handmaid’s Tale.

The finale will also feature another character from The Handmaid’s Tale. June, played by Elisabeth Moss, will secretly help Daisy (Lucy Halliday) escape from Gilead.

I watched Daisy really stand her ground, explaining why she’d been acting the way she had and how important it was to her to help Becka. But it was when she talked to June that things got really interesting. Daisy started describing all the amazing things about the people she’d been helping, and she mentioned Agnes almost as an afterthought. June just froze when she heard that name – it was like a switch flipped. She told Daisy that Agnes, who also goes by Hannah, is actually the daughter she had to leave behind. It was a huge moment, and you could feel the emotion in the room.

With tears in her eyes, June listened as Daisy praised Agnes, calling her one of the bravest people she knew. These comforting words were exactly what June needed, and they gave her the strength to let Daisy return to Gilead and continue her secret work with Mayday.

Everyone is desperately trying to save Becka from a terrible fate, but Aunt Lydia’s plan, while intended to help, shifts all the responsibility onto Becka’s mother, Kate Hewlett. When Becka questions the plan, Mrs. Grove insists it’s the right course of action, stating, “It’s what should’ve happened.”

Aunt Lydia, Aunt Vidala, and Mrs. Grove decided to protect Becka from a terrible truth, and essentially offered Mrs. Grove as a sacrifice instead. On the very day of Becka and Garth’s wedding, Mrs. Grove was led to the courthouse to be hanged.

Becka was given sedatives to help her cope with her wedding day, as her mother wasn’t there. After Garth put her to bed, he locked the door and left. Because Garth works for Mayday and is now married to Becka, many viewers believe she might eventually join him in opposing Gilead, given her dislike of life there.

Now that Becka’s story has diverged from the book and a second season of The Testaments is happening, we’ll have to wait and see what happens to her next.
