Though fans expected Megan Cusack to leave Call the Midwife after four seasons, the news of her departure in early 2025 still saddened many. They were disappointed to see her character, Nancy, go.
Everyone at Nonnatus House was sad to see the cheerful midwife go, but she was leaving for a new job that would also let her spend more time with her husband and their new baby. She brought a lot of happiness to the house and will be greatly missed.
With Nancy’s departure, Cusack entered a new phase, and she shared that Nancy was eager to challenge herself and develop professionally.
She shared with TopMob that while she’s gained valuable experience, she feels like she’s just beginning her career and is ready to take a risk to move forward.
But the decision wasn’t easy, as Cusack recently explained to TopMob.

I decided to pursue theatre again, but leaving my previous situation was still really difficult,” she explained.
She added that she’s remained close with a number of her former co-stars.
Georgie Glen, Linda Bassett, Rebecca Gethings, and Annabelle Apsion all came to support me in my show, which I thought was wonderful. I try to stay in touch with everyone as much as I can, she explained.
It’s a strange feeling when it ends, because we film for so long – seven months out of the year, actually. You spend more time with your cast and crew than you do with your own family and friends, so it really starts to feel like a second home. I was incredibly upset on my last day of filming, I really cried, but it helped knowing I’d see everyone again.
“It’s just, yeah, a change in work life.”
It hasn’t even been a year since John Cusack left the show, and the rest of the actors won’t be back filming for quite a while.
Usually, we’d get a Christmas episode before the new season starts in early 2027, but there won’t be one this year.
The show won’t have a typical Christmas special this year, according to creator Heidi Thomas.
Instead of continuing the original series, a three-part prequel set during the Blitz will be made, according to executive producer Pippa Harris. The BBC hasn’t officially announced this change yet.
After that, the show will continue with a movie filmed abroad in 1972, starring some of the actors we know now – though their identities haven’t been announced yet. Then, the series will come back for its sixteenth season.
Filming the season 15 finale felt incredibly meaningful,” Thomas explained. “We were saying goodbye for a bit, but it also gave us a chance to reflect on everything we’d accomplished together and how far we’d come.

But what can fans expect from season 16?
Thomas explained they’d return with some adjustments. He assured listeners that these changes wouldn’t be harmful, but rather positive and beneficial.
She went on to reveal that she’s “exploring the notion of a community hospital”.
These health centers were popular in the 1970s, and I remember one in Liverpool where people went for general medical care or X-rays. Though they disappeared by the late 1980s, they’re now making a comeback because they’ve proven to be an effective healthcare model.
“So, we’ll see.”
