House of the Dragon’s Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy reveal Daemon and Rhaenyra’s key season 3 “tension” and tease “domestic” scenes

With the third season of House of the Dragon coming soon, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith have hinted at the changing relationship between their characters, Rhaenyra and Daemon.

Following his period of isolation at Harrenhal last season, Daemon and Rhaenyra are reunited, and appear to be much more in agreement with each other at the start of this season.

Smith shared with TopMob and other media that he finds it fascinating to see characters in everyday, home settings. He believes this offers a wider understanding of their personalities and he particularly enjoys those scenes. He jokingly wondered what it would be like to be married to the character Daemon.

D’Arcy suggested beginning with a beautiful setting, and believes Daemon and Rhaenyra share a deep connection, almost as if they are two parts of the same being.

They just seem to naturally understand each other, and of course, they’re closely related by blood. That connection creates a special dynamic, and it was really enjoyable for me to explore that again at the start of season 3.

D’Arcy hinted that Rhaenyra and Daemon’s happiness won’t last, explaining that they have different ideas about how Rhaenyra should rule. Daemon has strong opinions on the matter, which will likely cause conflict between them this season.

Over the past three seasons, the relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra has changed dramatically. It started as a difficult connection between uncle and niece, became strained by mistrust and plotting, and ultimately developed into a genuine partnership.

But will that be enough to secure Rhaenyra’s place on the Iron Throne?

The upcoming third season of House of the Dragon will plunge the Targaryen family into a full-scale civil war. Rhaenyra is determined to win the Iron Throne, no matter the cost, and her rivals, the Greens – with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) increasingly concerned – are desperately fighting to maintain their power.

The story will likely begin with the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval conflict between Corlys Velaryon’s fleet and the Triarchy. This battle promises to be a fiery spectacle, with both sides unleashing attacks across the sky and sea.

We hope for nothing less.

The third season of House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO Max on June 21st. You can currently watch seasons 1 and 2 on Sky and NOW – visit their website to learn how to subscribe.
