AC Black Flag Resynced is more than a nostalgic cash grab, says director – “We’re just trying to make you dream a bit”

Considering how highly regarded the Assassin’s Creed series is, the enduring popularity of Black Flag clearly demonstrates just how good it is.

Fans were incredibly excited about the possibility of a new version of AC IV, even more so than for many other highly anticipated games. When Black Flag Resynced was officially revealed, that excitement exploded.

After getting an early look at the game, TopMob Gaming interviewed director Richard Knight to discuss the decision to remake Black Flag and the reasons behind its 2026 release.

Knight started by saying that despite any financial difficulties, Black Flag was a truly remarkable project.

The game is set in a beautiful Caribbean environment and features a beloved protagonist, Edward Kenway. Players can enjoy both classic assassin gameplay and exciting naval combat.

Considering everything together, it’s clear this has a lot of potential. The next step is figuring out how to update it and turn it into a game for today’s audience, and there are many exciting possibilities for doing so.

Resynced’s marketing has heavily emphasized its accuracy to the original. I asked Knight why it was so crucial to recreate the original experience rather than simply improving upon it.

Black Flag is iconic and widely loved, so it was really important for us to capture that same energy in the game. We wanted players to feel like they were truly experiencing Edward Kenway, and not just a copycat.

We made sure everything was accurate through internal reviews, and then we collaborated closely with players to evaluate the portrayal of the character and test the gameplay, incorporating their feedback throughout the process.

When reimagining something, it’s not necessary to perfectly copy every detail, but it’s crucial to capture the original’s essence and atmosphere. That way, any new additions will still feel true to the source material.

Okay, so remakes are awesome, but they always come with this tricky balancing act, right? You want to modernize things to meet what players expect now, but you also don’t want to ruin what made the original game so special in the first place. It’s tough figuring out what needs a refresh and what should stay exactly as I remember it!

Whether a game needs updating depends on the specific title, but some older games have features that don’t work well today,” explained Knight, the director of AC Shadows. “Things like missions where you’re instantly killed if you’re detected, or being unable to crouch for cover, feel frustrating by modern standards.

“So those are easy things where it’s like, ‘OK, we can improve. We can take from the latest games.’

We realized our existing combat systems – neither the one from Shadows nor the original Black Flag – felt right for modern games. We needed something new.

We completely rebuilt the combat system, focusing on staying true to Edward’s fighting style. Now, winning quickly depends on your skill, but how you play overall still matters a lot.

Honestly, getting Resynced to a good place has been all about listening to what players like me have to say. The developers, especially Knight, have said our feedback was ‘critical’ – and I totally believe it! They really took what we wanted into account while making the game.

People’s memories are surprisingly detailed – they’ll likely remember Edward as even more handsome than we currently portray him, don’t you think?

People will recall small details that aren’t currently visible until we reveal what he truly looked like.

This feedback has been really valuable. It helps us understand what made the original game special, not just the specific details, but also the overall feeling and experience players had. We want to capture that same feeling in this remake.

Resynced joins a growing trend of successful video game remakes, following in the footsteps of popular revivals like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Oblivion.

I asked Knight why he believed players were so eager to relive these experiences.

There’s definitely some fondness for the past involved, but I believe games have simply gotten better over time. We all have memories of what games used to be like, and it’s exciting to imagine those same games with modern features that would really enhance the experience.

We recently added a small feature to Resynced that I’m really excited about: you can now raise and lower the hood whenever you like. It might seem minor, but this wasn’t possible before.

Combining familiar experiences with new possibilities sparks your imagination and helps you see what else is achievable with things you already understand.

Playing devil’s advocate, I asked Knight if the current wave of remakes suggests that the entertainment industry is prioritizing familiar, nostalgic content over original concepts.

He paused to consider, then explained that often, the industry tries to figure out why something popular was successful in the first place. Other times, they’re simply trying to recapture that same positive feeling.

With the updated version of Black Flag, we’re not simply asking people to repurchase a game they already own. We’re aiming for something more than that.

We want to spark your imagination and get you thinking: what if this game were released now, with a modern twist? Considering what you already know and love about Assassin’s Creed and other games, what kind of exciting experience could you expect today?

“And the cool thing about games is that they’re not just a story that’s told over two hours.

We’ve added a lot of new features and content, and we really encourage you to try them out. We hope you’ll enjoy experimenting with the new controls and gameplay to see what you can discover.

Knight is currently concentrating all his efforts on Resynced, but he’s open to the possibility of remaking older Assassin’s Creed games in the future.

What makes this brand special is its consistently engaging content and memorable characters, no matter when or where you experience it. You can always find something interesting happening.

“I always like to dream a little bit, and you never know what the future might bring.”

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced releases on 9 July 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
