After the launch of the 007 First Light game, the leader of Amazon Games made some statements that were unclear about what’s next for the series.
IO Interactive’s James Bond game, released in late May, has proven to be a hit, earning positive reviews and strong sales figures.
Jeff Gattis, who leads gaming at Amazon, recently spoke with Polygon and caused some concern among fans regarding future 007 games. His comments were misinterpreted to suggest Amazon might take the 007 project away from IO Interactive, but that isn’t happening.
In a recent interview with IGN, he explained that IO Interactive and Amazon Games have a very close and positive working relationship.
“First of all, let me set the record straight for you,” Gattis says. “I did not confirm that Amazon Game Studios is publishing the next one. Did not say that. So unfortunately, it got picked up, and once it runs, it runs. No, IO’s been great. They’ve been great partners. In fact, I was over there visiting them in Copenhagen a couple of months ago. The game’s doing great. Let’s let the game breathe and have its day.”
He assures fans that Amazon will be doing right by the burgeoning series.
We’re confident we’ll make smart decisions about this. Ultimately, it depends on whether people want to play the game. If there’s enough demand, we’ll move forward with development.
So, I’ve been playing 007 First Light, and it’s actually really good! IGN is trying to figure out if the positive response means they’ll make another one, and it sounds like the developers are hinting at it too. Gattis basically said a sequel should happen, which is awesome to hear as a fan!
I fully expect a sequel to be made. First Light has been a strong seller, and IO Interactive anticipates the game will be profitable, even though it was their most expensive game to develop.
Based on Gattis’s recent statements, it seems likely that IO Interactive will continue to create future installments and will keep collaborating with both Amazon and MGM, just as they did with the First Light project.
We likely won’t hear about a sequel for at least two years. In the meantime, the developers are planning to regularly update the current game with new content and features.
