
According to Xbox’s new chief strategist, Matthew Ball, the decision to release Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution only on Xbox Series X/S is just the first step in a larger plan. Speaking at The Game Business Live event, Ball explained that Xbox intends to release more games exclusively for its consoles, and these two titles represent the start of a new strategy for doing so.
Ball explained their approach to exclusive content, saying they have a specific plan and strategy for both on- and off-platform releases. They recently revealed two upcoming exclusive titles, one launching this year and another next year. They intentionally announced both titles now, even though they could have waited to announce the first, ‘Clockwork,’ closer to its 25th anniversary or used it to kick off announcements for 2027.
We chose to use two titles to make it clear this wasn’t a simple, one-time event or just a celebration of a milestone. We wanted to emphasize that while Gears is celebrating its 20th anniversary and we’re excited to be back on Xbox with an exclusive reveal, this is actually the beginning of a larger, ongoing initiative.
Xbox needs to ensure its fans continue to enjoy and see the benefits of owning their consoles and being part of the Xbox community. To keep players loyal for years to come, Xbox plans to focus on releasing games exclusively for its consoles, which is crucial for building its brand and expanding as a gaming platform.
He explained that players can count on a consistent stream of new games that reward their loyalty to Xbox, encouraging them to continue playing on the platform. He also noted that exclusive games are vital for growing and strengthening any gaming brand.
It appears Xbox is adopting a strategy similar to Sony’s, continuing to release its big live-service games on multiple platforms. According to Ball, games like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable – which have already been announced for PlayStation 5 – will still be released on PS5 as promised.
We also have a group of titles we’ve already announced or promised to our partners, players, and teams, and we’re keeping those commitments.
Ball believes the recent shift back to releasing games exclusively on Xbox consoles is thanks to the leadership of new CEO Asha Sharma. He says Sharma has openly discussed the challenges facing Xbox and has begun implementing plans to improve the situation. However, Ball also noted that it will take time for these efforts to fully restore player trust and enthusiasm for the Xbox brand.
Ball stated that they will be increasingly transparent about their projects and the reasoning behind them. He explained that he’s now able to provide a complete list of games that will be exclusive to their platform this year, next year, and in the future.
We understand the upcoming challenges, how we’ll make decisions about them, and how our success will be measured. However, this process needs to be transparent and open to outside perspectives. Those of us here are deeply knowledgeable in this area, and I recognize the feedback that we haven’t fully addressed external concerns. It’s crucial that we share this understanding both within our organization and with our collaborators.
Ultimately, we want to make things clear and easy to understand for all Xbox players – both current and potential. We’re working towards that goal, but aren’t quite there yet.
