Grace Gummer Reacts to Jack Schlossberg’s Criticism of Love Story

Grace Gummer sees where Jack Schlossberg is coming from.

Following criticism from John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ grandson about Ryan Murphy’s Love Story – specifically Grace’s depiction of his mother, Caroline Kennedy – the actress said she understood his perspective.

“It’s hard for me to fathom what it’s like to watch someone else depict your life on screen,” Grace shared with The Hollywood Reporter in a June 6th interview. “I aimed to portray her truthfully, with kindness and sensitivity. I have a great deal of respect for her as a person.”

Grace said that while no one from the Kennedy family has contacted her personally, she would simply allow Caroline to share her thoughts if they ever met.

About two months prior, Jack mentioned that while he and his mother hadn’t watched the entire series about the romance of Caroline’s late brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, he did show Caroline a short clip of Grace’s acting.

You know, I was recently on Katie Couric’s ‘Next Question’ and I was telling her about a funny moment. I showed someone a clip of themselves, and honestly, we were both cracking up! It was one of those moments where you just can’t help but laugh until your sides hurt.

He remembered the person being extremely upset, but they and others were laughing because it reminded him of how his mother would react in a similar situation.

Although the Kennedy family reportedly had reservations about the show, Grace Kelly’s parents, Meryl Streep and Don Gummer, were incredibly proud of her acting.

She told The Hollywood Reporter that her entire family called her after the finale, and each of them called individually. They all had kind things to say about her performance, which she really appreciated.

Grace’s impressive work is already generating Emmy buzz, and many experts predict she’s a top contender.

She felt fortunate. She believes her work is self-explanatory, and the strong emotions it’s sparked in people globally are a testament to her role as an artist.

She explained that when she focuses on that, she feels like she’s making a positive impact and feels proud of her efforts.

Episode 9, sporting the gut-wrenching title “Search and Recovery,” had a lot to tackle.

The finale of Love Story quickly covers the ups and downs of the couple’s entire marriage, starting with their therapist suggesting they try living apart.

Instead, they spend the day drinking at a low-end bar and eventually end up back at John’s place, where he hasn’t been lately because he’s been staying at the Stanhope Hotel. That’s where he was staying when he died in real life.

They sweetly remember their favorite kiss, with charming flashbacks showing the moments. However, the next morning, their problems haven’t disappeared, and John bluntly asks if Rory’s wedding is now out of the question.

Several sources say they argued about Carolyn not wanting to go to the wedding of John’s cousin, Rory Kennedy, in Hyannis Port just days before the plane crash that killed them while they were traveling to the event.

Although Carolyn’s older sister supported her decision to attend the wedding, several biographies suggest Carolyn, John, and Lauren all shared a lunch together at the Stanhope Hotel.

Regardless of how things were going between them, Lauren eventually joined hands with both individuals and they agreed to drive her to Martha’s Vineyard on July 16th, en route to Hyannis Port.

In Love Story, Lauren informs Carolyn that she and John had already considered that idea. She then advises Carolyn to stop needing to be right and instead focus on what’s best for their relationship.

Lauren also told John, while he was on his way to the airport, to be patient and remember that big changes don’t happen instantly for either of them.

After initially telling John she wouldn’t go, Carolyn surprisingly appears at the George gala before Rory’s wedding, seemingly motivated by Lauren’s encouragement.

For the event, which was one of the few Carolyn attended with her husband that year, the show perfectly recreated her iconic Yohji Yamamoto outfit and sleek, pulled-back hairstyle.

The “Newman’s Own” George Awards ceremony, held at U.S. Customs House on May 19, 1999, happened before John injured his ankle and had to use crutches – and a cast until the day before he passed away. It also occurred two months before the plane crash.

Carolyn is feeling more and more alone in her Tribeca apartment, drained by the constant attention of the paparazzi and upset by the untrue and sensational stories in the tabloids – rumors about depression, drug use, even pregnancy. When she hears about the death of Princess Diana in a car accident, she’s devastated and can’t look away from the television. Meanwhile, her husband, John, focuses on minor details, like whether the dishes are clean, and then goes for a run.

Carolyn recalls that despite Diana doing everything right and posing for photos, the paparazzi still pursued her relentlessly, ultimately leading to the tragic events of August 31, 1997, in Paris.

John later confessed to his wife that he feared she might become a recluse, and he was also terrified that if he began watching the news about Princess Diana’s death, he wouldn’t be able to look away.

In person, John tried to convince the Queen to be on the cover of George magazine, but she respectfully refused. Carolyn was seated close to Princess Diana at the funeral of Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22, 1997. Biz Mitchell, who was the executive editor of George at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter that John initially hesitated to cover Diana’s death. Ultimately, they published a powerful photo essay documenting the public mourning in London.

Carolyn was deeply affected by the death of Princess Diana, and John confided in his friend Billy Noonan that he didn’t know how to help her, saying she was very shaken up.

As someone who’s followed the Kennedy family for years, I was particularly struck by a story Kathy McKeon, Jackie Kennedy’s former assistant, shared in her memoir, Jackie’s Girl. She recounted a dinner in Hyannis Port around the time of Princess Diana’s funeral, and revealed that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy privately expressed intense frustration with the paparazzi, reportedly saying she ‘hated those bastards’ – a really raw and honest glimpse into the constant pressure she faced.

She said, according to McKeon, that she felt like yelling and swearing at them, explaining they had gotten very close behind her as they followed her into a building.

To which John said, “You gotta just take it easy. Relax.”

After John’s dinner party—which he presented as being for Carolyn’s friends, though she corrected him, saying they were friends of both of them—a major argument erupts between the couple as Carolyn clears the table.

There was some tension, with John jokingly saying he’s glad he never let Carolyn meet his mother, implying she wouldn’t have approved of their relationship. Carolyn responded that John only contacts her when he feels he needs to, and added that she suspects he finds it difficult to see how unhappy he makes her.

The argument is completely destructive. She claims he doesn’t give her any room to breathe, and he accuses her of defining herself solely by her problems. It culminates in John announcing he’s going to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, exhausted by the look in her eyes that tells him he’s not succeeding in their marriage.

She begs him not to leave, and he promises he’ll be back.

If this is the check-in at the Stanhope Hotel two days before the plane crash on July 16, 1999, it means the couple in Love Story continued their lives for almost two more years. Despite facing difficulties in their final weeks, they also enjoyed travel, social events, and some happiness together during their nearly three years of marriage.

As Beller pointed out, the media focused on rumors of trouble in their relationship – and photos of Carolyn looking sad – because those stories and images attracted more readers, and this pattern continued throughout their lives.

Just before things got tense, John proposed they go out, but Carolyn gently reminded him to rest, explaining he was still recovering from a crash with his Buckeye powered parachute.

She adds, “Didn’t you promise Caroline you were done flying?”

This moment, like many others in the story, subtly reminds us of the characters’ eventual destination, reinforcing the underlying direction of their relationship.

John was still recovering from a broken ankle when he took the flight. He’d broken it in May 1999 while piloting a powered parachute, and was using crutches at the time.

In his 2004 book, The Kennedy Curse, Edward Klein writes that Jacqueline Kennedy begged her son not to pursue a pilot’s license. She reportedly said, “Please don’t do it,” fearing further tragedy after so many family deaths.

In the seventh episode, titled “Obsession,” the newly married couple returns from their honeymoon in Turkey to discover a large group of photographers camped outside their New York City apartment, and they refuse to go away.

Honestly, it was as awful as everyone said. The paparazzi were relentless, constantly hounding Carolyn and begging her to just smile for them. When she understandably didn’t respond to their invasive questions – things like whether she was expecting a baby – they turned truly nasty. Some started calling her horrible names, even worse than that, all just to try and get a rise out of her. It was heartbreaking to watch.

According to MJ Bettenhausen, as detailed in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she and John Kennedy got married. Bettenhausen explained that this was another way Carolyn’s independent nature felt restricted.

Rudy Mance, the costume designer for Love Story, accurately reproduced the complete Prada outfit Carolyn wore when she first encountered the paparazzi, just after returning home with John.

The woman’s outfit – a camel-colored midi skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag – mirrored her personality: stylish and sophisticated, yet understated.

Mance explained on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. He said they spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was worried, but John tried to improve things outside their house. He asked the photographers to be respectful of his wife and give her some space as she got used to her new life.

According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and asked everyone to respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.

According to Steve Gillon’s 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John and the photographers ended immediately after John finished speaking. As he and Carolyn walked to their car, the photographers rushed forward, each trying to get a unique photo. This chaotic scene terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview seemed to go perfectly. However, she was shocked to find a crowd of photographers and fans waiting outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly decided to withdraw from consideration.

As a style expert, I’ve always been fascinated by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s impact. While there’s no official record of her ever interviewing with Ralph Lauren, the story goes that he was so impressed by her effortless style, he apparently instructed his entire design team to keep her in mind with every piece they created. Harper’s Bazaar reported he’d say, ‘Every time you design something, think of Carolyn Bessette.’ That really speaks to the power and influence she had on fashion, doesn’t it?

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her nephew’s future wife to visit her home, Hickory Hill, in Virginia.

Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that she’d likely lose people’s trust and face unfair judgment going forward. She explained that men can be incredibly hurtful, frustrating, and emotionally draining, and urged Carolyn to avoid those kinds of relationships.

Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn she needed to ignore the negativity and stay strong.

According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once shared that life as a Kennedy was challenging. However, the mother of eleven explained that she learned a crucial lesson: the only way to cope was to affirm her own self-worth each morning. She’d tell herself, simply, ‘I am enough.’ She realized that eventually, you truly believe it, and no one—not even the Kennedys—can take that feeling away from you.

Ethel cautioned Carolyn against losing her temper in public again, as described in the book. She warned that these men were easily provoked and urged Carolyn not to let them bait her into misbehaving in front of everyone.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning process.

Honestly, I’m really worried about my sister. It seems like she’s feeling left out, and I truly believe making an effort to include her would make a huge difference. I just can’t walk into my wedding – and start my marriage – with any unresolved tension or resentment between us. It’s so important to me that we’re good before the big day.

Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”

John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend fences. His sister had both blamed Carolyn for a public scene and taken it as a reason to call off the wedding. John believed this gesture was the best way to resolve the situation.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal life was interfering with her work, and Calvin admitted he was surprised and a little disappointed to hear it.

He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez – a designer he used to work with – creating her wedding dress. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.

“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”

Okay, so get this – in the show, they hint at the dress because Carolyn was actually photographed with Narciso and Caroline! It’s like, a little detail they included! But the real Carolyn? She quit her job before she even started seriously planning the wedding, which is SO different from how it’s portrayed! I just find all these little details fascinating, honestly. It’s like they took some liberties with the story!

Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her marriage. She expresses this worry privately to Carolyn, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

Ann described John as overwhelmingly affectionate, and she was concerned about how Carolyn would handle such a strong personality. She wondered if anyone could stay grounded around someone so captivating and intense. Ultimately, Ann hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive when she needs him.

During a quiet conversation, John tells his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.

It’s unclear exactly what Ann said that night, but John’s friend, Robert Littell, wrote in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it might not be what her daughter needed.

And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”

Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed long before. This means the romantic scene in the movie Love Story – where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding – was actually made up to add a more dramatic and touching element to the story.

Carolyn faced a real problem right before the event: Narciso had designed a dress without a zipper, meaning she’d have to pull it over her head after her makeup was already finished.

Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that getting Carolyn into her dress was incredibly difficult. She described it as if the dress was flowing over Carolyn’s body like cream, and Narciso was struggling to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.

As a longtime friend of the bride, I was so thrilled to be involved in the wedding! I actually designed John’s tux and all the groomsmen’s suits, and I told Town & Country that I even made sure John had a nice handkerchief. Honestly, when a friend is getting married, you just want to do everything you can to make them and their partner feel amazing and truly happy on their special day.

In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony ultimately began at 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles to light the space.

Okay, so in the latest episode, things get really romantic! John decides this is the moment and proposes to Carolyn – and it happens while they’re out on a rowboat! The setting is pretty special too, they’d just come from Hyannis Port where Carolyn was meeting his whole family for the first time. And let me tell you, his aunt Ethel Kennedy – played by Jessica Harper – definitely makes an impression; she’s the clear head of the family, a total matriarch!

Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.

In 1994, Per Beller and John brought Carolyn to the family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John signed up to help with breakfast while they were there, but didn’t ask Carolyn to join him.

Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He cleverly proposed by saying, “Fishing is so much better with a partner.”

He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but in reality, John asked Jackie’s close friend Maurice Tempelsman to create a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring, often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.

According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before she responded to a proposal. While biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli noted in his 2019 book, American Prince, that she didn’t explicitly say yes, she did start wearing an engagement ring and told friends they were planning a wedding. However, in an oral history, RoseMarie Terenzio recalled Carolyn telling her they became engaged over the holiday weekend.

Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months before their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.

In Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) objects when Calvin tells her she can’t continue working for him because of the media attention surrounding her engagement to JFK Jr., which is highlighted by a New York Post cover story. He believes her personal life will become too distracting.

Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets,” and Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”

The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, hinting that this would be their final time together – a clear sign they were breaking up.

Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and would live apart while working through any problems respectfully. Their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.

At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than Calvin.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a provocative image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.

She watched the news from home, understanding John had to deny proposing to her. She knew if he didn’t, speculation about her rejecting him would distract from the important news about George.

Carolyn intentionally avoided attending the launch on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for releasing a statement to deny engagement rumors after a photo of Carolyn’s ring surfaced, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her presence would be a distraction, and that she didn’t mind not being there.

John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn seemed deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff believed this moment was an early indication of what their relationship would be like – a pattern of John controlling the narrative and Carolyn accepting it.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated argument while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with Carolyn happily accepting John’s marriage proposal, despite their earlier fight.

The highly publicized fight between the couple on February 25, 1996, became instantly iconic. Details like John appearing to remove Carolyn’s engagement ring, him crying on the curb, and their argument over the dog – with Carolyn famously declaring, “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!” – were widely reported and immediately recognizable to the public.

The show centers around a fight sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his marriage proposal. He angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d simply accepted him, but they’d actually been engaged for around five months. While Carolyn secretly tries on the ring and seems open to the idea when they’re alone, she hadn’t officially said yes before the argument began.

In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her partner often argued because John was being exploited by his friends.

I’ve seen this happen before, and it’s always messy. A friend of mine was once at a wedding seated next to a New York Times reporter writing about the nuptials, and she was really upset by it. She felt it was a betrayal to share something so personal with the media. Afterwards, she did feel badly about the resulting drama, but she was also frustrated with the groom. She explained she was just trying to look out for him, to make sure nobody was taking advantage of his kindness. It’s a tough spot – wanting to protect a friend but feeling unheard and disrespected in the process.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.

Although it looked good on television, the real John was often forgetful, frequently misplacing his keys and wallet. This habit eventually made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.

Beyond hinting at what’s to come, John also doesn’t mention the real reason he’s taking Carolyn to a party at his sister Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s home – it’s a formal birthday dinner for Caroline.

When Carolyn expresses worry, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that John often forgets things, and she didn’t mean to imply he was bringing women home without warning.

According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. The event, held at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment, was more of a party than a formal dinner.

The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the private room looking incredibly happy and uniquely herself, and acting warmly and spontaneously.

I remember it so clearly. Caroline gave John a hug and then turned to Carolyn, saying, “It’s so lovely to finally meet you!” But after that, I noticed her friends would give a quick, polite smile and then immediately turn their attention back to John. It was a little awkward, honestly.

Contrary to initial impressions, Carolyn and Caroline actually hit it off immediately, according to Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time. Someone who saw them having lunch described them as genuinely enjoying each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to arrange a meeting with him because she was interested in a relationship. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was deeply hurt that he would believe such a thing, so she left.

After what felt like a long time, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.

According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining rumors about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships, but it happened relatively early in their dating history. The book details how John abruptly ended their relationship after receiving it, following a summer of dating in 1992. Carolyn then didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

The new series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, opens with Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advising Annette Bening (portrayed by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.

It’s not known if she created that outfit for Annette Bening, who later married Warren Beatty, but a 1996 article in The New York Times reported that Carolyn was the preferred salesperson for Calvin Klein’s famous customers, like Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.

According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she would help customers find clothes that suited them, offer styling advice, and ultimately, sell a significant amount of merchandise – reportedly millions of dollars worth over time. He described it as a truly positive experience.

In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her keen understanding of publicity by advising Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.

As someone who’s followed fashion for years, I remember Carolyn being one of the very first to recognize Kate Moss’s potential. She really understood what Kate brought to the table and played a huge role in shaping the Calvin Klein image we all know from the ’90s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give Calvin her phone number, reminding him he can always reach her at work.

“He was simply bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, whom they playfully called the “sexy doorman” and who was also her occasional boyfriend, entered the room.

John suddenly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.

According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992 when he came to Calvin Klein for a private fitting – an event that reportedly excited her coworkers. He then asked her to join him at a gala, but Carolyn initially thought another woman was his date and declined an invitation to an after-party, as MJ Bettenhausen told Beller.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, dated casually starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was more intermittent than consistent, according to Beller’s account.

According to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted Bergin’s assertion in his 2004 book, The Other Man, that he continued a sexual relationship with her – not only after she met John, but throughout the rest of her life.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. After about 20 minutes, just as she’s about to leave, he arrives riding his bicycle.

He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they finished their long date, it had been stolen. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.

He said he wished he hadn’t rushed, as they reached her front door. She asked what he meant, and he kissed her. He then asked if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening before ending the date.

Honestly, I’ve always believed their first date – or at least, the one we see – was staged for the show. It’s totally possible John biked there and was a little late in real life, but that whole cozy scene of them connecting over drinks? I think it was created specifically for the series to feel more… perfect. It just felt a little too good to be true!

Daryl Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) is at John’s apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen), that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.

He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993—his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s—though his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, isn’t happy about it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers through a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.

John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and later, when they ran into each other at an event, he confessed he was struggling because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.

The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to introduce the star of Splash in Love Story, but producers didn’t consult Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.

Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding characters deeply. She said it’s difficult to push specific viewpoints when interviewing the people who inspired those characters, so they generally avoid doing so unless absolutely necessary.

According to Jacobson, Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story needs, but the writers still make sure to show that she understands the celebrity world better than Carolyn does.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that big changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, pushing him to think about what he truly desires.

Daryl promised to come back for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, someone asked him for an autograph, causing him to lose hold of the leash. Tragically, Hank was hit by a taxi and killed. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.

Let me share a heartbreaking story I recently came across. According to the new book, JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recounted a terrible incident. Back in May of 1994, while walking John’s dog, Hank, in Central Park, Hank slipped his leash and was tragically hit by a car. It’s a really sad detail that paints a picture of a difficult time for John.

I’ve read about how it all went down, and it’s just heartbreaking. Apparently, he flew out to L.A. to help his friend bury his dog, but while he was there, his own mother took a really bad turn with her cancer. He was incredibly upset, feeling like his friend, Daryl, had essentially made him choose between a dog’s funeral and being with his mother when she needed him most. It was a really tough time for him, and he felt a lot of resentment about the whole situation.

In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, then collapses at home. This scene was created for dramatic impact, but it’s also meant to emphasize how seriously ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.
