Nick Reiner Seeks Access to $1.5 Million Trust Fund Set Up by Parents

Nick Reiner is pursuing funds he believes are owed to him.

The son of director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner is asking a court to let him use money from a million-dollar trust fund his parents created. He needs the funds to pay for his legal defense while he’s being held on charges related to his parents’ deaths, charges he denies.

According to documents filed on June 8th and reviewed by TopMob News, the 32-year-old is asking for a share of his trust fund. He claims his parents specifically instructed that he receive a portion of the money when he reached age 30.

The petition states that Nick is heartbroken by the loss of his parents. However, the details surrounding their deaths aren’t relevant to this legal case about the trust. Nick is presumed innocent, just like anyone facing accusations, and has the right to use his own resources to defend himself.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen many trust situations, and this one is particularly concerning. It appears Nick has over $1.5 million held in trust, with portions intended to be released when he turned 30 and 35. However, the petition claims the trustee, Paul R. Kanin, hasn’t been releasing the funds as planned, offering inconsistent explanations. In fact, he’s reportedly asked the court to release all of the trust money to cover his legal fees and fund a commissary account, which is a really unusual request. It’s a frustrating situation, and Nick is understandably seeking full access to his funds now.

In other parts of the court documents, Nick’s lawyers state that his previous attorney, Alan Jackson, stopped working on the case because Nick’s trustee couldn’t afford to pay him. Nick’s family—including his siblings Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28—had originally offered to cover Jackson’s fees, but the expected funds never became available, leading the attorney to withdraw.

The lawyer also included a statement in the court documents saying his firm is prepared to represent Nick as soon as the necessary funds are provided.

Jackson didn’t initially explain why he stopped working on Nick’s case when he withdrew in January.

The lawyer, who has represented high-profile clients like Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein, and Karen Read, stated on the Kelly Ripa podcast in January that she and her team are fully dedicated to acting in Nick’s best interests. She emphasized their ongoing commitment and desire for him to receive the strongest possible legal defense.

Despite his withdrawal, Jackson has maintained that his former client is not guilty of murder. 

Following Jackson’s removal from the case, Nick’s family released a statement to TopMob News saying they are confident in the legal system and won’t be making any further public comments about the ongoing case.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, spoke openly about his struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which focused on the topic of substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 18 times before turning 30. 

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted experiencing homelessness in multiple states. “I was homeless in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas,” he said. “I spent nights, even weeks, living on the street, and it was definitely not a good time.”

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs. 

In a 2018 interview on the Dopey podcast, he described a period where he was heavily using stimulants – likely cocaine and another drug – and stayed awake for days. He explained that this led to him damaging things in his guest house, saying he ‘went 10 rounds’ with his surroundings.

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Nick was under a court-ordered mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021. A Los Angeles Superior Court clerk verified that the conservatorship ended in 2021.

Steven Baer, the court-appointed conservator and a licensed professional handling finances and well-being, told the New York Times that mental illness is a widespread and often misunderstood problem, calling the situation a terrible tragedy. He did not offer any additional details.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, 2025, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that attendees observed Nick behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

According to two sources familiar with the event, Nick was causing disturbances at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

Jane Fonda saw Rob and Michele the night before their tragic deaths.

The actress shared on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed healthy and happy. She added that she is now deeply saddened and shocked by the news.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a police statement, officers found two people inside the home who were later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard about what happened. The detectives – the really good ones, from the Robbery Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section – they immediately started digging into everything, trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. They left no stone unturned, I tell you, determined to find out the truth behind it all.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele did not die from natural causes; they appeared to have been stabbed, according to a source with the Reiner family who spoke to NBC News.

According to an initial police investigation, the Reiners were victims of homicide, the LAPD announced in a press release.

During the police investigation, footage obtained by MS Now showed Nick purchasing a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station in downtown Los Angeles, near USC, around 9 p.m. on December 14th. He was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and carrying a red backpack.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.

Police announced that Nick Reiner was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

On December 15th, while on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Michelle Obama shared that she and Barack Obama had plans to meet with Rob and Michele on the very day the couple was discovered deceased.

On December 16th, attorney Alan Jackson—known for previously defending high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read—told TopMob News that he is now representing Nick, who was arrested two days prior in connection with his parents’ murder.

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to publicly charge Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t been given medical approval to attend the court hearing.

According to reports, the official stated that all prisoners must receive medical approval before being taken to court. They are optimistic the individual in question will be cleared for transport tomorrow.

Oh my god, I just heard the news! Nathan Hochman, the District Attorney here, said they’re officially charging Nick with two counts of first-degree murder! And it’s even worse – they’re adding a ‘special circumstance’ charge because there was more than one victim. I can’t believe this is happening… it’s just… awful.

The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with an additional allegation: personally using a deadly weapon – a knife – during the attack on his parents.

He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.

Nick was formally charged Dec. 16. 

As a lifestyle expert who often consults with authorities on these matters, I can share that Rob and Michele were found around 3 p.m. on December 14th, but investigators believe they sadly passed away roughly 12 hours before that. It’s a heartbreaking detail, but understanding the timeline is important.

According to a press release from the District Attorney on December 16th, Nick is accused of killing his parents by stabbing them. Authorities allege he used a knife as the weapon in the murders.

Nick made his first court appearance on December 17th at the Los Angeles Supreme Court. He was wearing a blue garment designed to prevent self-harm and was in shackles. He didn’t enter a plea at this hearing, but scheduled an arraignment for January 7th.

On December 17th, the medical examiner concluded that both Rob and Michele died from multiple stab or cut wounds.

During a court appearance on January 7, 2026, Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, informed the court he was no longer representing him. Nick will now be represented by a public defender, according to a reporter from MS Now who was present.

The Reiner family released a statement to TopMob News saying they are confident in the legal system and won’t be making any further comments about the ongoing case.

On February 23rd, Nick appeared in court in Los Angeles and pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors alleging he committed multiple murders.

Kimberly Greene, a public defender, is now representing him, taking over from his previous lawyer, Alan Jackson. The L.A. County Public Defender’s office stated they will not be making any comments about his initial court appearance or the case itself for the time being, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 29th.
