If you were a fan of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in the mid-1980s, there was one toy many kids desperately wanted but couldn’t get. While Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain were popular, Mattel released a much larger playset in 1986 that cost a whopping $89.99 – about $260 today. That price tag meant most parents couldn’t afford it. Now, this rare MOTU collectible can sell for as much as $50,000 on eBay.
First released in 1986, the Eternia playset lived up to its billing as the biggest He-Man set ever created. It was the perfect centerpiece for any collection, with a main tower stretching over 30 inches high – significantly taller than both Grayskull and Snake Mountain. Beyond that, the set included towers resembling both Grayskull and the Viper base, a motorized monorail for moving figures around, and the option to connect it to other hero playsets, assuming you had enough space.
The MOTU Eternia Set Was One of the Most Ambitious of It’s Time

Ted Mayer, a key figure in the initial development of the toy line, envisioned the Eternia playset as something truly massive – dwarfing all previous sets. His early concepts reached up to 40 inches in size and included ambitious details like creature heads concealing weapon turrets and even slime chambers. However, extensive redesigns and development work meant the final version arrived after the peak of the franchise’s popularity. Combined with a high price tag – after many fans had already invested heavily in the toys – it proved too expensive for most parents.
The Eternia playset has become one of the most sought-after treasures for collectors of the original Masters of the Universe toys, and it was incredibly difficult to find as a child in the 1980s. Although Mattel re-released it in 2021 as part of the Masters of the Universe Origins line (for $550), a well-preserved, original set from 40 years ago is much more expensive and hard to come by.
Currently, a complete boxed set of this collectible is listed on eBay for $49,999. The box itself looks surprisingly well-preserved for its age. If that price is too high, you can often find individual pieces at auction for less. A professionally graded set recently sold for just under $13,400 in March 2023, confirming its status as a highly desirable playset from the 1980s.
If you received an Eternia playset for Christmas in 1987, you were among the lucky few who could fully immerse themselves in the world of Masters of the Universe, something many others couldn’t experience. And if you’ve managed to keep that playset in good condition all these years, you now possess a valuable piece of collectible history – the physical embodiment of the Power of Grayskull!
