Shudder’s New Overlooked R-Rated Horror With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Officially Coming To Streaming This Month

A new Shudder horror movie is headed to streaming.

Shudder is still one of the best streaming services for horror fans. It focuses entirely on the genre, offering a mix of original movies and shows alongside licensed titles. Over the past year, Shudder has released several well-regarded original horror films, including The Ugly Stepsister, V/H/S/Halloween, Good Boy, Influencers, Bodycam, and The Mortuary Assistant. Often, these originals have a short run in theaters before becoming available to stream a few months later, and a new film is about to follow that same path.

, another Shudder original, has now set a streaming release date for Friday, June 26. This upcoming streaming bow follows a premiere earlier this year at SXSW on March 16 and a limited theatrical release in North America on March 27.

Directed by Meredith Alloway, the R-rated film blends horror and dark comedy in a story about a witch coven of manipulative mall saleswomen whose carefully controlled world begins to unravel when a new hire named Pumpkin (Lola Tung) infiltrates their ranks, triggering deadly consequences. In addition to Tung, Forbidden Fruits also stars Lili Reinhart, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, Jordan Duarte, and Zach Thompson, among others.

Forbidden Fruits‘ upcoming streaming release follows a broadly strong reception from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film enjoys a respectable 75% score, with the audience-driven Popcornmeter coming in just under that at 73%.

In a review for ScreenRant, critic Graeme Guttman gave Forbidden Fruits a 7 out of 10 rating. He particularly liked the film’s distinctive style, the performance by Tung, and how director Alloway skillfully drew inspiration from other films while still creating something original.

While packed with memorable lines, over-the-top fashion, and a wildly chaotic ending, Forbidden Fruits is ultimately more fun than thought-provoking. It doesn’t bother with subtlety; instead, this movie—clearly inspired by Mean Girls and The Craft—relies on bold, energetic moments and delivers witty, sarcastic dialogue. It’s a refreshing return to the classic ‘bad girl’ genre that’s been missing from modern cinema.

Though Forbidden Fruits earned just $2.4 million in theaters, its release on Shudder will likely bring it to many more viewers. This is good news for director Alloway, as Forbidden Fruits is their first feature film. Alloway co-wrote the screenplay with Lily Houghton.

It’s entirely possible that Forbidden Fruits will help get another project off the ground for Alloway. It’s not clear what the writer and director will tackle next, but her debut suggests she has a unique style that she brings to the horror genre, potentially making her a filmmaker who will collaborate with Shudder on future projects. For now, though, Shudder subscribers will evidently have a new film to watch in a few short weeks.
