7 Coolest Star Wars Ships That Have Never Been in a Movie, Ranked

For nearly half a century, Star Wars has featured incredibly iconic spaceships, though not all of them have appeared on the big screen. What’s truly special about Star Wars is the sheer variety of ships – from small, one-pilot fighters like the X-wing to enormous Imperial Star Destroyers, each with its own strengths. Luke Skywalker famously demonstrated the power of even a single X-wing when he blew up the Death Star.

While X-wings and the Millennium Falcon are iconic, some of the most impressive Star Wars spaceships are actually found outside the films. The Ghost, from the Star Wars Rebels series, is a great example – fans might recognize it as a hidden detail in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Leaving the Ghost aside, here are five of the coolest ships that haven’t made it to the big screen.

7. The Interdictor Class Star Destroyer

Let’s start with the Interdictor-class Star Destroyer. Originally from the older Star Wars stories, this ship became officially part of the Star Wars universe in the series Star Wars Rebels. It was a powerful, experimental design that could have turned the tide for the Empire if they’d built more of them. Luckily, it never moved past the testing phase. If Darth Vader had used an Interdictor during the Battle of Hoth, the rebels likely wouldn’t have been able to escape.

In Star Wars, spaceships travel faster than light by entering a different dimension called hyperspace. Because hyperspace connects with normal space through gravity, pilots must carefully plan their routes to avoid the gravitational pull of objects like black holes, stars, and planets – getting too close can force a ship out of hyperspace. An Interdictor is a special Star Destroyer that creates a powerful gravitational field, blocking hyperspace travel around it. Any ship attempting to use hyperspace near an Interdictor is pulled back into normal space and can’t re-enter. Military commanders would strategically place Interdictors at the back of their fleets, heavily guarding them, to prevent enemies from escaping.

6. The Gladiator Class Star Destroyer

I’ve always been fascinated by the Gladiator-class Star Destroyer. It first showed up way back in 1985 in the Star Wars: Droids animated series, though it didn’t actually have a name then. It wasn’t until 2008, in The Force Unleashed game, that it officially became known as the Gladiator class. Apparently, these ships were designed during the Clone Wars, but the Empire didn’t really favor them. Palpatine’s team preferred bigger Star Destroyers that didn’t need as much protection. So, the Gladiators ended up being used as patrol ships, transporting troops and providing some serious firepower. They became pretty common sights throughout the galaxy!

The Gladiator-class ship is now officially recognized as a standard warship, and it’s become even more formidable. Current models are fully independent, operating as patrol vessels with a crew of one thousand. They can maintain order in a sector of space for as long as two years without any resupply. These ships likely played a key role in allowing the remnants of the Imperial fleet to endure for so long after the Emperor died.

5. The Bes’uliik Starfighter

After the Yuuzhan Vong war in the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, Mandalore rose to prominence as a powerful faction. The Bes’uliik was a highly advanced Mandalorian starfighter. Initial versions were flown by a single pilot, but the design was intended for crews of two or three. Built with durable Mandalorian beskar armor, the Bes’uliik was incredibly adaptable, capable of serving as anything from a bombing run aircraft to a long-range fighter.

Very little is known about Bes’uliik ships, even according to older sources. Boba Fett once commanded a squad of four in combat and was amazed by their power – they managed to bomb factories on Murkhana while under attack from an entire fleet! Luke Skywalker even piloted one during a battle, proving just how formidable these ships are.

4. The Errant Venture

The Errant Venture is widely considered the most interesting Star Destroyer in the Star Wars universe. Originally appearing in the X-Wing novels by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston, it’s a uniquely converted Imperial vessel – a mobile casino painted bright red to stand out. It’s a fan-favorite addition to Star Wars history, and surprisingly, it’s even been acknowledged in current official storylines. The novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher specifically mentions the Errant Venture as a famous gambling destination in the galaxy.

3. Dash Rendar’s Outrider

Let’s talk about Dash Rendar’s ship, the Outrider, which first appeared in the ‘Shadows of the Empire’ story back in the 1990s. It’s a YT-2400 that’s been heavily modified, and intentionally designed to look like the Millennium Falcon, though Dash Rendar always claimed his ship was superior. Like many ships used by smugglers, the Outrider has been illegally upgraded for speed and packs a serious punch in terms of weapons. Similar to the Errant Venture, the Outrider and Dash Rendar have both become officially part of the Star Wars story, though Dash has mostly just been mentioned in passing.

2. The Jedi Vector

The Vector is a special starfighter first seen in Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi, used by the Jedi during the High Republic era. It’s built specifically for Force-sensitive pilots and intentionally lacks some standard safety features, allowing a Jedi to fully utilize its incredible agility. What truly sets the Vector apart is its unique weapon system – it can only fire when activated by a lightsaber, requiring the pilot to consciously choose violence and consider other options. A Vector briefly appeared in live-action in the series The Acolyte.

1. Luthen Rael’s Fondor

Despite many impressive ships, Luthen Rael’s Fondor Haulcraft from the series Andor stands out as number one. Luthen, a skilled spy, heavily modified the cargo ship with unique defenses, including protection against tractor beams and laser weapons that functioned similarly to a lightsaber. Because Fondor Haulcraft are usually used for legitimate cargo transport and rarely by criminals, Luthen’s ship often avoided detection. Unfortunately, the ship was eventually confiscated by the Imperial Security Bureau after Luthen was captured.
