2026 is already a year for the books when it comes to new movies. Not only are audiences finally getting a new Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie after eight years, but major franchises are returning after decades of waiting. This year has also delivered one of the most successful horror movies of all time in Obsession, and the highly anticipated adaptation of Project Hail Mary. The year isn’t even half over either, so we’re not even accounting for the new Spider-Man movie, Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Chapter 3, and whatever other surprises are yet to come that no one can predict.
20th Century Studios might have another big hit on their hands with Whalefall, a new thriller that looks incredibly intense. The first trailer for the film, directed by Brian Duffield and starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, shows a truly frightening scenario: being trapped inside a whale. According to the trailer’s description, while rare, being swallowed alive by a whale is possible, and the movie portrays it as a terrifying ordeal.
Whalefall Trailer Unlocks a New Fear For All Swimmers
Inspired by the novel from Daniel Kraus, who also co-wrote the movie with Duffield, Whalefall is a gripping survival story. It follows a young diver trapped inside a whale’s mouth, struggling to stay alive as the creature descends into the deep ocean.
The movie Whalefall tells the story of Jay Gardiner (played by Abrams) who dives off the California coast to find his father’s remains (played by Brolin). He’s unexpectedly swallowed by a sperm whale. Trapped inside with limited oxygen, Jay begins to understand that the wisdom his father shared might be his only chance to survive.
Readers curious if Whalefall can maintain its unique premise throughout the story will be pleased to find plenty of unexpected twists. Kraus expertly alternates between Jay’s desperate struggle for survival inside the whale and flashbacks to his life before, revealing how he ended up in this extraordinary situation. As you might expect, being stuck inside a whale is far from comfortable, and the situation is made even more intense by his dwindling oxygen supply and the fact that he isn’t the only creature inside the whale’s stomachs.
Brian Duffield, the director behind the funny horror film Spontaneous and the suspenseful alien thriller No One Will Save You, is a filmmaker to watch. His new movie, Whalefall, promises to be another unique and surprising release in 2026. Plus, actor Mason Abrams will be starring in both Whalefall and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil just weeks apart, making for a thrilling and busy fall season for him.
Whalefall opens October 16.
