AEW Prevents WWE From Signing Rey Fenix, Adds "Nearly One Year" to Contract Following Injury

As a long-time wrestling fan who has witnessed the evolution of some extraordinary talent, I must say that the potential departure of Rey Fenix and Pentagon Jr. from All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was indeed a cause for concern. These two have been integral to AEW’s tag division since its inception, and their collective skills as the Lucha Brothers have consistently left audiences spellbound.

Originally signed with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Rey Fenix and Pentagon Jr., often referred to as the Lucha Brothers, were rumored to move to WWE this fall, following the expiration of their contracts. As summer approaches, speculations have been circulating about their potential shift to the sports entertainment titan. Both wrestlers made their debut with AEW at its first event, Double or Nothing in 2019, and have since been regular figures in AEW’s tag division for the subsequent five years.

Don’t expect to see the Lucha Brothers on WWE Monday Night Raw or WWE SmackDown anytime soon.

According to both the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, AEW is reportedly extending Rey Fenix’s contract with the company by almost a year. This means Fenix will be staying with AEW for an additional period of time.

On two separate instances, Fenix has been sidelined due to injuries that kept him away from AEW television for an extended period. At the beginning of 2022, he was out for close to four months because of a dislocated elbow. Later, from October 2023 until April this year, he took another six-month break to heal from another injury. Assuming there are no more interruptions due to injuries, Fenix’s contract would have been prolonged by approximately ten months in total.

The report indicates that even though Fenix is in a challenging position, Pentagon Jr. intends to showcase his skills at WWE once his AEW contract comes to an end. Reportedly, Pentagon had some dissatisfaction regarding past clashes between AEW and CMLL, a situation now resolved, as well as his role on their programming.

Since July, Fenix, Pentagon, and Pac have not appeared on AEW’s programming. Initially, they were expected to shine at the AEW ALL IN: London, but their participation was cancelled when it became obvious that they would no longer be part of the company.

Though the Lucha Brothers are mainly recognized as a team, it’s worth noting that both Fenix and Pentagon have achieved impressive feats in single matches as well. For instance, Fenix was once the AAA Mega Champion, while Pentagon boasts an Impact World Championship (formerly known as TNA World Championship) title win to his record.
