Ahsoka Season 2 Updates: Cast, Story & Why It’s Taking So Long

Star Wars is back in theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and while new movies are planned – including Star Wars: Starfighter next year – the franchise will continue to release shows for the foreseeable future. Currently, the second season of Ahsoka is the only live-action series Lucasfilm has in production. Despite ongoing speculation about future Star Wars films, fans are particularly excited about Ahsoka Season 2, eager to see how the cliffhangers and storylines from the first season are resolved.

Despite production being underway for Ahsoka Season 2, Lucasfilm has been very secretive about the details. However, some information has been revealed, including when we can expect the new season. Here’s a summary of what we know about the next installment of Ahsoka.

Ahsoka Season 2 Won’t Release Until 2027 – Delays Explained

For a long time, people guessed that Season 2 of Ahsoka would arrive later this year, possibly after The Mandalorian and Grogu finished airing. Unfortunately, the new season has been pushed back. It’s now expected to premiere in early 2027, though an exact date hasn’t been announced yet.

So, I was hearing from Dave Filoni recently that he’s deep in the editing process for Ahsoka Season 2, working on all the episodes simultaneously. That, combined with the show being a Star Wars production, strongly suggests post-production – specifically the visual effects – is the main reason for the delay. They clearly want to get it right, and that takes time. Rushing a finished product wouldn’t do anyone any favors. What’s also interesting is they shot a lot more on location this season, moving away from relying solely on the Volume stage. That kind of shift in filming style almost always adds extra layers of complexity in post, and likely contributes to the extended timeline.

Ahsoka Season 2’s Cast and Star Wars Characters

Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka in Season 2, a role she first played in live-action in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. Many of the actors from Season 1 will also be back. Here’s a look at the cast and their characters:

  • Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano
  • Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren
  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla
  • Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger
  • Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati
  • Jeryl Prescott Gallien as Aktropaw
  • Jane Edwina Seymour as Lakesis
  • Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn
  • Rory McCann as Baylan Skoll
  • Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker
  • David Tennant as Huyang
  • Steve Blum as Zeb
  • Chopper
  • Admiral Ackbar

Following the unfortunate passing of Ray Stevenson before the release of Ahsoka Season 1 in 2023, Rory McCann has taken over the role of Baylan Skoll. McCann previously stated that continuing Baylan’s story after the season’s cliffhanger was the best course of action. Fans last saw Baylan discovering statues of the Mortis gods while searching for the mysteries of Peridea, and given how popular Stevenson’s portrayal was, leaving that storyline unfinished would have been unsatisfying. Therefore, recasting the role was necessary.

What We Know About Ahsoka Season 2’s Story

With Season 2 of Ahsoka still a ways off, Lucasfilm hasn’t released any official trailers or plot details yet. However, fans can guess what might happen next based on how Season 1 ended. The finale brought back Grand Admiral Thrawn, setting up a major showdown with this powerful villain. Thrawn will likely try to attack the New Republic and restore the Empire to power. This means Hera and her friends will be working hard to defend against him, and hopefully, the New Republic government will now fully support their efforts since Thrawn is a clear and present danger.

Now that Ahsoka and Sabine are stranded on Peridea after helping Ezra return, their relationship will likely be a central focus of Ahsoka Season 2. We can expect to see Sabine continue her Jedi training, becoming more skilled and self-assured after the events of Season 1. It will be compelling to watch if they try to find a way back to their galaxy. While it might seem odd that they aren’t involved in the upcoming conflict with Thrawn, it appears they’ll forge their own destiny and build a life for themselves on Peridea, as Ahsoka hinted at in the Season 1 finale when she suggested they had found where they truly belonged.

With Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati now on Peridea, it makes sense for Ahsoka and Sabine to stay behind and watch them. Baylan’s story is shaping up to be a highlight of Ahsoka Season 2. In the first season, he sought something beyond the usual Jedi and Sith conflict, which led him to discover the Mortis god statues. Ahsoka seems like the perfect place to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Force and its origins. If Ahsoka and Sabine remain on Peridea, the show will have to skillfully balance the events there with what’s happening in the main galaxy to avoid feeling fragmented.
