Anna Maxwell Martin has explained the reason behind the end of the show Motherland, especially considering the popularity of its spin-off, Amandaland.
The actor starred as Julia in the popular BBC comedy, a constantly stressed working mom juggling the demands of school, kids, other parents, and the everyday craziness of family life – often with hilarious results.
Motherland began as a pilot episode in 2016 and then became a full series in 2017, running for three seasons with two additional Christmas specials. The final Christmas special, ‘Last Christmas,’ aired in December 2022 and featured a deeply moving moment for Julia, as her character’s mother, Marion, passed away during the episode.
Maxwell Martin told The Times that the show had run its course after three seasons and concluded naturally.
She explained they weren’t upset because they were proud of the work they’d accomplished. She also expressed her happiness that the show ‘Amandaland’ had done so well.
When asked if she’d be interested in appearing on the spin-off, Maxwell Martin quickly replied, “No, it’s their show and they should have the spotlight.”

The show now centers on Lucy Punch’s character, Amanda, who used to be the most popular mom at her kids’ school. We see how she’s coping with a divorce and a big move – from the wealthy area of Chiswick to South Harlesden, which she prefers to call ‘SoHa’.
The new series also features Philippa Dunne as Anne, a supportive friend to Amanda, and Joanna Lumley as her strong-willed mother, Felicity. The show follows Amanda as she navigates the challenges of raising teenagers and tries to regain her place in society.
As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to hear Amandaland is coming back for a third season! The show’s been a real hit for the BBC, and after the second season just dropped earlier this month, they’ve officially confirmed Lucy Punch will be returning as Amanda – and honestly, I can’t wait for more of her wonderfully chaotic adventures!
Like Motherland before it, Amandaland also won the BAFTA award for Best Scripted Comedy. Motherland received the honor in 2022, and Amandaland earned the same recognition at the 2026 BAFTA TV Awards.
Even though Julia doesn’t seem likely to visit SoHa in the near future, the larger world she’s a part of is thriving. Maxwell Martin seems content to let Amanda, Anne, and Felicity take center stage for now.
Amandaland is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
