BBC announces new Michael Portillo documentary – with 3 of his railway series set to air

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news as a supporter! I’ve just learned that the BBC is set to launch a trio of fascinating new railway programs starring none other than Michael Portillo. Among these, there’s a special documentary planned to commemorate a significant milestone in our rail history.

This fall, BBC Two is set to broadcast a two-part documentary series titled “The Railways: A 200-Year Journey,” timed with the commemoration of the historic first run of a steam-powered passenger train on a public railway. That groundbreaking event occurred between Stockton and Darlington in September 1825.

The series consists of two hour-long installments that follow Portillo as he journeys by train through the Northeast and Northwest regions of England. In these episodes, he delves into the impact railways have had on us over the past 200 years and contemplates their potential role in our future.

In addition to that, you’ll find Portillo appearing in the freshly launched eighth series of Great Continental Railway Adventures and the sixteenth series of Great British Railway Expeditions, airing simultaneously on BBC Two from the 10th of March, 2025.

As an eager admirer, I can’t help but share the exciting news about the upcoming season of Great Continental Railway Journeys! This time around, our beloved host, Michael, will be embarking on a fresh adventure, delving into some of Europe’s most enchanting and historically rich landscapes. From the breathtaking vistas of Switzerland to the captivating allure of Croatia and Bosnia, and from the picturesque charm of Norway and Denmark to the historic treasures of Normandy and Brittany – it promises to be an unforgettable journey filled with stunning scenery and fascinating tales!

During these journeys, he’ll discover the ways in which nature and history have influenced the lives of people residing in some of Europe’s most captivating landscapes.

In the sixteenth season of Great British Railway Journeys, Portillo visits places such as Epping Forest, the Black Country, the scenic Lake District, and the Weald.

In a statement, Portillo expressed his pride for creating fresh installments of both Great Continental Railway Journeys and Great British Railway Journeys. Just like always, he emphasized that the excitement of his travels is heightened by the captivating individuals he meets during his journey.

This year, we’ll create a unique collection to honor the 200-year anniversary of railways in Britain and globally. A heartfelt thanks goes out to you, our viewers, for your unwavering dedication to these shows.

Since 2009, Portillo has been presenting railway-themed programs, with the franchise encompassing a diverse range of titles such as “Great American Railroad Journeys,” “Great Indian Railway Journeys,” “Great Alaskan and Canadian Railroad Journeys,” “Great Australian Railway Journeys,” “Great Asian Railway Journeys,” and “Great Coastal Railway Journeys.
