Amazon MGM Studios is working on a live-action remake of the popular 1980s cartoon, Jem and the Holograms.
So, I just read on Deadline that this reboot is being made by Kilter Films – those are the folks behind Westworld and the Fallout show, which I absolutely loved! Hasbro Entertainment is involved too, which makes sense given they own the property. It’s good to know it’s in capable hands.
Created by Christy Marx, Jem first appeared in 1985. The show centered around Jerrica Benton, who ran a record company, and her pop star persona, Jem, the lead singer of the band Jem and the Holograms.
The show lasted three seasons and was famous for including music videos in every episode. It also featured original songs, like its catchy theme song, “Truly Outrageous.”

Jem and the Holograms has been adapted for live action before. A film version was released in 2015, directed by Jon M Chu, written by Ryan Landels, and featured a cast including Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald, and Juliette Lewis.
The movie was poorly received by critics and audiences alike, earning a 22% rating from critics and a 40% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also didn’t perform well financially, bringing in just $2.3 million at the box office despite costing $5 million to make.
Deadline reports that the upcoming series will stream on Prime Video, adding to their collection of young adult shows like Off Campus, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and We Were Liars.

Westworld, created by Nolan and Joy, aired for four seasons on HBO from 2016 to 2022. Currently, their series Fallout is popular on Prime Video, with a third season already planned. Fallout stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, and a talented ensemble cast.
