Berserk: 7 Things to Remember For The Manga’s Return

After nearly a year of anticipation, the 384th chapter of Berserk will be released on June 12th, bringing fans back to the story of Guts and his companions. It’s been a while since the last installment, so now is a good time to revisit the key events of the Band of the Hawk. With so much happening in the manga, and considering where we left off with the Black Swordsman, a quick refresher on seven important plot points will be very helpful.

7.) Guts Versus The Cave

When last we left the Black Swordsman, both he and his fellow heroes were attempting to find help with the Eastern Nation known as Kushan. Unfortunately for Guts, the brand on his neck was seen as a “no-go” for the Kushan Empire, and thus, they voted to exile the hero into a mysterious, supernatural cave. While the contents of the cave remain a mystery, this is sure to be the focal point for chapter 384. To date, no one has seemingly managed to actually escape from this cave alive, most likely meaning that Guts is about to be in for one of the biggest fights of his life.

6.) Casca Has Been Kidnapped

One of the biggest plot points of Berserk, following the tragic passing of creator Kentaro Miura, has been Guts losing Casca to Griffith. Thanks to infiltrating Elfhelm, the new Band of the Hawk was able to steal Casca, which could not have happened at a worse time. Casca’s sanity has finally been restored, leaving Guts with little time to focus on the reunion he has longed for over the years. Now trapped in Falconia as Griffith takes the fight to Kushan, Casca is attempting to free herself while simultaneously being powerless in the wake of the new Band of the Hawk’s march.

5.) Guts’ Emotional Damage

After Casca was kidnapped, Guts experienced a severe mental breakdown, and hasn’t even touched his sword since the passing of creator Kentaro Miura. Many Berserk fans hope the current storyline, focusing on Kushan, will help the Black Swordsman find his way back to sanity. Though Guts has endured years of suffering fighting demons, he truly shattered when he couldn’t protect Casca. He didn’t even attempt to defend himself against Griffith’s most dangerous assassin, highlighting how much work Guts needs to do to overcome his depression and self-doubt.

4.) Griffith Has Never Been Stronger

After being betrayed by Griffith and transformed into the demonic being Femto, the White Hawk, also known as Griffith, found a way back to Earth and regained a human body during the Conviction Arc. Now the ruler of Falconia, he’s rebuilding the Band of the Hawk, accomplishing something many thought impossible: uniting Apostles and humans into a single, incredibly powerful army. Even with Kushan’s help, Guts and his companions will face a monumental challenge if they try to confront Falconia.

3.) Guts’ New Eclipse

We’ve talked about Guts’ experience in the cave before, but the newest chapter of Berserk adds a lot more complexity. Guts found himself engulfed by a strange liquid, inside something that looked like a giant clam. The previous scene showed him trapped within this shell-like thing, suggesting he might undergo a transformation similar to how Griffith became Femto. While the Godhand don’t seem to be involved this time, Guts could be very different when he emerges. It’s unlikely he’ll become a demon himself, but even if he just regains his sanity, it would be a significant setback for Griffith and his forces.

2.) Skull Knight’s Origin Remains a Mystery (Though This Could Change)

Throughout Berserk, one of Guts’ strongest allies has also been one of his most mysterious. The enigmatic Skull Knight was the one to save Guts and Casca from the Eclipse and has popped up from time to time. In recent chapters, readers finally got a glimpse of Skull Knight’s origin, where a different iteration of the Godhand had seemingly cursed him to this existence as a powerful spirit. While we might never get the full story, the idea of Berserk finally revealing Skull Knight’s background before the end would make sense. Speaking of the end…

1.) We’re In The End Game

Earlier in the story, Skull Knight revealed to Guts that the series has entered its final phase, often referred to as the “End Game.” Given that Berserk has been running since the 1980s, this signals that the epic tale is building toward a climactic battle. While the very next chapter won’t be the last, it’s likely we’ll be waiting several years for the complete ending. However, with Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga committed to finishing the story as a tribute to Kentaro Miura, an ending will happen – the timing is the only uncertainty.
