Bosch’s New Prequel Series Dramatizes One Of Modern America’s Most Important Events

The popular Bosch universe on Prime Video is expanding with two new shows in the next year, including a second season of the Ballard spinoff. But the most anticipated release is a new prequel series on MGM+ that tells an original story set during a significant year in American history.

Featuring Cameron Monaghan as the lead detective, Bosch: Start of Watch goes back to 1992, a pivotal year for the Los Angeles Police Department. The series follows a young Bosch as he deals with the aftermath of the Rodney King verdict and the massive riots that erupted in Los Angeles following the actions of four police officers.

Tragically, 55 people lost their lives, including 11 who were killed by police and the National Guard, who were deployed to control the rioting, looting, and protests.

Immediately after the LAPD officers – Sergeant Stacey C. Koon, and Officers Laurence M. Powell, Theodore J. Briseno, and Timothy E. Wind – were found not guilty, widespread unrest began. The officers had been on trial for severely beating Rodney King, an unarmed Black man.

The beating of Rodney King, his trial, and the verdict deeply affected the Black community in Los Angeles, who saw them as evidence of ingrained racism within the Los Angeles Police Department and the city’s courts. This happened while Daryl Gates was Police Chief, a time when racial tensions in Los Angeles were already high.

The 2024 film 1992, featuring Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood, and the late Ray Liotta, offered a compelling look at the Los Angeles Riots. Now, the Bosch series is taking on the same historical event.
