Cancelled MAPPA Anime Sparks Revival Rumors Ahead of Major Milestone

MAPPA’s anime series, Yuri!!! on Ice, first aired in 2016 and quickly became a fan favorite, helping to launch the studio to prominence. It’s been nine years since the series ended, and while a sequel was hinted at, fans have been waiting for updates. MAPPA did announce and even release a teaser for a prequel film focusing on Victor’s skating career, but unfortunately, the project was cancelled in April of last year. This cancellation caused a lot of disappointment among fans who had waited nearly eight years for news. Currently, all 12 episodes of the anime are available to stream for free on YouTube, but only in Japan, to celebrate the anniversary of the finale. Fans outside of Japan can still watch on official streaming platforms. The news, shared by @comic_natalie on X, quickly went viral, with many expressing their continued love for the series. Despite the cancelled prequel, Yuri!!! on Ice remains incredibly popular, and even Junichi Suwabe, the voice actor for Victor, shared the news on his official X account, receiving a lot of attention.

What Does This Update Mean For Yuri!! on Ice’s Future?

Despite promotional efforts and special offers, there’s still no word on whether the anime will return. When it was canceled, the studio, MAPPA, didn’t hint at a possible continuation. Because the show is an original creation, fans can’t turn to a manga or light novel to find out what happens next. Though the ending was satisfying, there was potential for more stories, particularly a prequel.

Victor’s rise to become a five-time gold medalist by age 27 was truly remarkable, captivating audiences worldwide and reaching incredible levels of success in his sport. While the story mainly followed Yuri’s development, Victor primarily served as his coach, idol, and partner, a role that deserved more exploration. A film focused on Victor would have been a great way to delve into his complex character and understand his perspective.

The anime’s ending suggests Victor might return to performing, as we see him skating with Yuri. They had agreed Victor would coach Yuri until he won five gold medals, but the story concluded after Yuri earned a silver. It seemed like their partnership was meant to last longer, but the anime ended sooner than expected. While the free episodes aren’t available on YouTube worldwide, you can currently watch the full series on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

I watched the series, and even though it only had one season of twelve episodes, the ending made it clear they planned to bring it back for more. A prequel movie was announced way back in 2017, focusing on Victor’s path to becoming a five-time champion, but unfortunately, the studio cancelled it this year, with no indication it would ever be revisited. When Netflix recently made an announcement, fans immediately started hoping for a continuation. I saw posts all over social media, like ones from @mousyymou and @yoidaily, going viral with thousands of likes – a lot of people are really wanting more of this story!

Without official word from Netflix or the animation studio MAPPA, fans are left hoping the story will continue sometime in the future. Because the anime is original and not based on an existing manga or novel, there’s no source material to reveal what happens next. The series concluded with Yuri continuing to pursue his dreams, and Victor committed to coaching him until he achieves five gold medals, just like Victor himself. The final episodes showed the couple skating together after Victor’s return to competition.

The anime’s story seems to take place after Yuri achieves his dreams. Instead of continuing Yuri’s story, the creators decided to explore Victor’s past, giving viewers a deeper understanding of his character. While the main story focused on Yuri’s development, Victor’s complex personality wasn’t fully explored – a prequel helps fill that gap. This allows fans to see Victor’s perspective and motivations, rather than just how others see him. All episodes are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
