Cancelled Shonen Jump Series Confirms New Return Ahead of Anime Revival

A popular manga series originally published in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump is returning after being cancelled eight years ago. This comeback coincides with the release of a new anime series this summer. While many manga in Weekly Shonen Jump become huge hits, like My Hero Academia and Dragon Ball, just as many are cancelled early on. However, recently, even these cancelled series have been getting a second look and are being celebrated by fans.

Several popular manga series from Shonen Jump are returning with new anime adaptations, and the next one is Black Torch by Tsuyoshi Takaki. Originally published in Jump Square and Jump+ for 19 chapters before being cancelled, Black Torch will receive a new anime revival this summer. To mark the occasion, Viz Media will also release a complete box set of the manga.

Black Torch Returns With New Anime Revival This July

The anime adaptation of Black Torch will premiere on July 4th as part of the Summer 2026 season. Viz Media will release a complete box set of the five-volume manga series in the US on September 22nd. Though the manga had a relatively brief run, it managed to cover a surprising amount of material with its consistent monthly releases, totaling just under 20 chapters. It will be interesting to see how the anime adapts the story when it begins airing this summer.

Kei Umabiki will direct the upcoming anime series, Black Torch, with animation produced by 100studio. Gigaemon Ichikawa is in charge of the story and script, Gou Suzuki is designing the characters, and Yutaka Yamada will compose the music. Crunchyroll will stream the new episodes exclusively to viewers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS, at the same time as they debut in Japan. Both Japanese and English dubs will be available.

What to Know for Black Torch

The Japanese voice cast for Black Torch features Ryota Suzuki as Jiro Azuma, Yoji Ueda as Rago, Sayaka Senbongi as Ichika Kishimojin, Junya Enoki as Reiji Kirihara, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Koga, Toshiyuki Morikawa as Amagi, Oya Tsuji as Toshimasa Azuma, Hideyuki Otsuka as Banjuro Tokieda, and Yuko Kaida as Toko Kusumi. The series revival includes a reprint of the previously cancelled manga, suggesting more to come.

The unexpected resurgence of Black Torch even surprised its original creator, Tsuyoshi Takaki. However, he’s heavily involved in the new series, overseeing the settings and storyboards. He believes the remake is an improved version that remains true to the original, bringing Black Torch to life with voice acting, sound, animation, and color.
