Cancelled Shonen Jump’s Anime Revival Confirmed Huge Blunder By Publisher

After being discontinued almost eight years ago, the manga Black Torch is making a comeback with a new anime series this year. Created by Tsuyoshi Takaki, who is known for other works like Heart Gear and Rose Guns Days Sorrowful Cross Knife, Black Torch originally ran in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine from 2016 to 2018. The announcement surprised many fans, considering the manga was cancelled due to low sales and viewership. However, the story is compelling enough to warrant a revival, even after all this time.

The anime is being made by 100studio, with Kei Kamabaki – known for directing Quality Assurance in Another World – at the helm. It’s scheduled to debut on July 4th, 2026, as part of the Summer 2026 season. Recently, the anime’s official X account introduced three new characters and the voice actors who will portray them: Toshimasa Azuma (voiced by Oya Tsuji), Banjuro Tokieda (voiced by Hideyuki Otsuka), and Toko Kusumi (voiced by Yuko Kaida). These characters are all important to the story, with Toshimasa – the protagonist’s grandfather – playing a particularly significant role.

What Is Black Torch About?

I’ve been hearing a lot about this series lately. It’s getting attention for its interesting take on the supernatural, combined with exciting action and surprisingly well-developed characters, all packed into a relatively short manga. Next year, 2026, will be its 10th anniversary! While it hasn’t gained a huge following with newer manga readers just yet, the trailer definitely grabbed my attention and seems like it will keep people watching. The story follows Jiro Azuma, a 17-year-old who’s an outcast because he can talk to animals. He’s just trying to live a quiet life with his grandfather.

Jiro tries to live a quiet life, but he always seems to find himself in trouble, which frustrates his grandfather. His grandfather wants him to honor the Azuma family’s reputation, as the Azumas are a well-known and respected clan of shinobi. Jiro has always known he was destined for something different because of his lineage.

When he saw the cat’s condition, he took it home, only to realize it was a powerful demonic spirit called a mononoke – a being that has been fighting humans for centuries. This discovery completely changed Jiro’s life, throwing him into a conflict with the supernatural world.
