In a conversation exclusively shared with ComicBook, Julius Onah, director of “Captain America: Brave New World”, has disclosed how the upcoming Marvel production confronts one of its main hurdles – devising action scenes for a Captain America lacking super-soldier abilities. The movie, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, adopts an innovative method for superhero battles by focusing on tactical intelligence over brute force, representing a substantial shift from the previous “Captain America” series. As Wilson engages formidable adversaries like Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk, this strategic approach becomes paramount. Onah explains that the creative team intentionally accentuated Wilson’s cunningness and combat skills instead of mirroring Steve Rogers’ power-based fighting style.
Director Julius Onah points out that Sam Wilson’s decision not to accept the supersoldier serum solidifies his role as the latest Captain America.
The director shared with us that the character isn’t like your typical superhero. He doesn’t possess special serums or immense wealth, but despite this, he remains exceptionally powerful. In contrast to Marvel’s initial expectations of overt displays of strength, the creative team chose a unique route. As exciting as smashing bricks and attacking enemies might be from an action perspective, it also showcases his resourcefulness and determination in using whatever tools are available to defeat an opponent.
It’s good news for Wilson that he won’t need to rely solely on his intelligence to conquer insurmountable obstacles. According to Onah, Captain America: Brave New World demonstrates Wilson’s creative battle tactics by displaying his use of high-tech Wakandan armor, his trademark wings, and the well-known shield.
In my opinion, regardless if he’s confronting an airplane or the Incredible Hulk, he’s harnessing power. It’s truly fascinating because it aligns perfectly with this character who not only endures whatever is hurled at him but also transforms it into a weapon against his foe.
Sam Wilson Still Has Steve Roger’s Moral Compass in Brave New World
At the heart of Captain America: Brave New World lies Wilson’s unwavering moral foundation.
In discussing the hero’s handling of conflict, Onah highlights that his unique trait is not venturing too far from humanity and restraint, which sets him apart. Mackie himself described Sam as “the ordinary man’s Captain America,” a character who has been unexpectedly placed in a leadership role, making him relatable to many people.
In the film “Captain America: Brave New World,” Wilson encounters trials that evaluate his core values. Throughout the story, The Leader, operating from within a corrupt White House, orchestrates events, while President Ross advocates for the government’s control over superhuman resources. This dual threat arises alongside the revelation of Adamantium, a material capable of overshadowing Wakanda’s technological dominance and potentially igniting a fresh arms race. As both the Avengers and American ideals hang in the balance, Wilson is tasked with demonstrating that upholding what is right surpasses the might of power, a lesson he received from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
Captain America: Brave New World releases in theaters on February 14th.
