As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of James Bond over the decades, I find Daniel Craig’s portrayal of the iconic secret agent to be nothing short of extraordinary. His ability to breathe new life into the character while maintaining its timeless essence is truly commendable.
Daniel Craig declined to comment on the possibility of a gay James Bond, after being asked about the topic at a press conference promoting his latest film.
Actor Daniel Craig, once famed for his role as James Bond, is collaborating with renowned filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (famous for movies like I Am Love and Call Me by Your Name) on a personal LGBTQ+ story entitled “Queer”.
The movie, inspired by William S. Burroughs’ novel, takes place in the 1940s and narrates the story of William Craig, who develops a powerful infatuation for American war veteran Eugene Allerton (played by Drew Starkey), while he is living in exile in Mexico City.
Craig’s openness to LGBTQ+ roles – his Knives Out character Benoit Blanc is also gay – inspired one journalist to ask whether his most famous character could also be depicted as queer in the future.
In a video posted online (by TMZ), Craig gives a shake of the head, chuckles, and mutters softly, “Well, I’m just saying… really?”
There’s room for debate as to why he decided to remain silent – perhaps he’s trying to move past the Bond role and concentrate entirely on his current venture, which seems to be his main priority now.
Regardless of the situation, Director Guadagnino interjects with his explanation, hinting at the possibility that the character portrayed as a spy might have always had LGBTQ+ inclinations to some extent.
He said, “Alright everyone, could we all act maturely for a moment?” He continued, “It’s undeniable that we’ll never uncover James Bond’s personal wishes, full stop. What truly matters is that he carries out his assignments effectively.”
In the movie Skyfall from 2012, Craig’s portrayal of James Bond hinted at him having same-sex encounters, particularly during a powerful scene with the villain, Javier Bardem’s character Raoul Silva.
The performer has likewise shared insights into filming intimate gay scenes for the series ‘Queer’ alongside co-star Starkey, expressing to journalists (through Variety): “Just like you, it’s clear that there’s no real intimacy involved in shooting a sex scene on a movie set.”
“We filled a room with onlookers, aiming to create a heartfelt, genuine, and authentic experience for you.”
Working alongside Drew was an absolute delight; his talent, charm, and grace made every moment on set a pleasure. We shared plenty of laughter during our time together, aiming to keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable.
