Ardal O’Hanlon recently made a quick appearance on Return to Paradise’s second season and hinted that his character, DI Jack Mooney, might return in the future.
Known for his role in Father Ted, the actor played the detective in Death in Paradise for four seasons. He was a bit of an unconventional investigator, but adapted to life on the island of Saint Marie more easily and quickly than those who held the role before him.
During the series, he dealt with the sadness of losing his wife, Kathleen, and later found love with Anna. Ultimately, he chose to leave the island and go back to London with his daughter, Siobhan.
Since then, O’Hanlon has made several guest appearances in the Australian series Return To Paradise, where he plays a mentor to Detective Sergeant Mackenzie, offering guidance from afar.
I’m really getting the feeling we might see him back on Saint Marie! When asked about returning to the show, he didn’t rule it out at all. He said you’re not supposed to revisit the past, but he’s not sure he feels that way himself, which gives me hope!
I really enjoyed working on the show, and the more time passes since it ended, the better I remember it being.

Honestly, I was so glad when it was over. It was a really tough shoot – any of the actors will tell you that – but it was also an amazing job and a fantastic experience overall. I learned so much, and I’ll always cherish the memories, but it was definitely physically and emotionally draining.
I might consider doing a Christmas special, or perhaps revisit that project sometime in the future.
O’Hanlon also had some ideas for where the show could go next. He mentioned hoping for a spin-off set in western Ireland, perhaps somewhere near his home, or even in Corsica, and joked about starting a petition to make it happen.
Fans would definitely welcome seeing more of DI Mooney, and O’Hanlon has shown he’s still a capable detective.
I’d actually make a great detective, I think! While filming ‘Death in Paradise,’ I was often able to guess who the killer was without even finishing the script. Plus, both I and my co-star, Finn, seem to have a knack for getting people to open up and share their secrets. Maybe it’s my innocent appearance or the fact that people recognize me from television, but strangers often tell me things they wouldn’t tell anyone else.
The popular show Death in Paradise will be back for two more seasons, and Don Gilet will reprise his role as DI Mervin Wilson.
After the announcement, Lindsay Salt, head of BBC drama, stated that “Death in Paradise” is a hugely popular show around the world, and the BBC is very proud to be its home. She happily confirmed that the show will return to Saint Marie for two more series, as well as additional Christmas specials.
Let’s just get that new spin-off sorted in the meantime, eh BBC?
Death in Paradise season 1-15 are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
